Reliving the past: they said it 3 monthes ago..

I thought it would be fun to read our discussion about #1 prospects from old Sanex boards 3 months ago..

TOPIC The fight for the top ranking has begun

Who will be the first player to take the place of Martina at the top of the rankings? Venus, Jenny or Lindsay? And why?

The possibilities of #1 at year end IMHO are in order of probability:

1) Capriati
2) Hingis keeps it
3) Venus Williams
4) Henin
5) Davenport

I don't think any other player has a realistic chance.

And that would also be Top 5 order
if I were to make an year end prediction now.

Jenny may take it 1st BUT then Venus will take it at the OZ.

my understanding was that Jenn can take it right following the US Open if she has a good hardoucrt season, and US Open, and Martina doesn't.
Venus can then fight Jenn for it during the last couple months of the season if she wants it.
If Martina was to win the US Open however, that all goes out the window.

Becca,
Hingis can win the US Open and still loose the number 1 ranking. Remember Jennifer doesn't have much to defend. All Jennifer needs is a good hardcourt season and a Quarterfinal apperance at the US Open and she will become 1.

Venus and Davenport are at a disadvantage until they bring up their events to 17 or better. Should Capriati not win at the US Open-the Aussie in 2002 is their best chance to unseat Jen unless one of them goes on a huge tear.

where the hell have you been? the fight has been on ever since hingis lost to graf at the 99 french open. that was the turning point in hingis' now downhill play...

Jennifer appears to be on the verge of taking then number one ranking.
However, I'm going to stick with Martina Hingis. She's a gamer.

At seasons end this will be the rankings:

1) Martina Hingis
2) Jennifer Capriati
3) Venus Williams
4) Lindsay Davenport
5) Justine Henin

Top 5 rankings at the end of the season IMO will be:
#1. Capriati
#2. Hingis
#3. V Williams
#4. Davenport
#5. S Williams or J Henin

By end of season

1. Capriati
2. US Open Winner, if not S.Williams
3. Hingis
4. V.Williams, if she doesn't win the USOpen
5. Davenport, if she doesn't win the USOpen

A lot depends on whether Venus plays during fall...

But assuming she doesn't this will be it:

1] Capriati
2] Venus (2200 to defend)
3] Lindsay (2100 to defend)
4] Martina (because she has 2700 points to defend!!!)

But if Venus plays in fall it is a toss up between Jenn and Venus!!

IMHO for the end of year rankings

1) Hingis
2) Venus
3) Davenport
4) Capriati
5) Clijsters

I do think Venus probably will take it away from her, if she starts caring more.

Manoucheka posted at July 18,2001 12:09:

Capriati has the best chance to take the number one spot from Hingis. Especially if she continues to play as well as she has been the whole year. Otherwise, Hingis will keep her number one spot. It is questionable for both Venus and Davenport since they have so much to defend in the hartcourt Summer season. I hope Venus can defend all her points and play more tournament to at least keep her number 2 spot.

1. Venus IF she defends her points and Martina doesn't do well

2. Jen IF she plays well because she has no points

3. Only IF Martina continues on her way that she has been..........If Martina wins a few or finals etc she is gonna keep it...we will see.....it will be a very fun summer

interesting ........ i didnt post on this but looking back many said Jen will end #1 ....

now its down to Jen and Linds

ys ..... did you get this from the other board ?????

as we've not seen Question Mark or Mulder on here ??????

LucasArg Oct 24th, 2001 04:43 AM

I didn't post either, but I woudln't say Jen either

ys Oct 24th, 2001 04:53 AM

Eggy,

yeah, I hacked the other board..
j/k..

In fact, when in late July they made an upgrade introducing member numbers, I started to look at how could I copy their database for different purposes, run some stats, perhaps creating some archives. First, I wrote a little program downloading user profiles, so I could run statistics on who posts how much, you probably remember that statistics thread, I was posting once a week. Then I wrote another program to download forums and threads. By the time boards went down, I just completed testng of it and started running it. I didn't have time to load much of it though, only overall about 70000 posts.. Mostly "General Messages" and "Non-Tennis"..

Crazy Canuck Oct 24th, 2001 05:45 AM

Phew! I'm glad I didn't make any embarrassing predictions I was worried I might be embarassed there for a second

Thanks for posting that. Personally I stand by what I said before., except since Venus wasn't able to play the indoor season, her and Jenn are no longer interchangeable.

saki Oct 24th, 2001 10:06 AM

lol @ Pices' comment in that quote! A 25 year old former drug addict can't be #1. Of course not...

RayRob Oct 24th, 2001 10:36 AM

No one gave Lindsay much of a chance back then did they? (Apart from DaveyFan of course) But most were putting her below Venus at #4 or #5.

That just goes to show that Lindsay does play best when she is underestimated! GO LINDSAY!

It is interesting though, that quite a few, back then, didn't think that Jen would get the number one spot.

Thanks for that ys.

Mulder was a character.

He used to post on tennisweek too, and I *think* Annak.

Someone, they're around I'm sure. And what about "Question Mark"? God that was a good act too

I was Davenfan back then and I was right, Lindsay will be number ONE at the end of 2001.

I think I had predicted SERENA to become the dominant player as her daddy told us all when VENUS was winning the slams. :)
