Blast Girl II:Goolagong

Here we go with Blast Girl II! When I get Wade "done" we can start a third thread labeled "Important" for career records.

If anyone has 1975 please let me know! We will need that year for both Virginia and Evonne to make their results complete.

Interviewed by Mike Gibson, Evonne relates how she no longer reads the papers because every story starts with the word "Aboriginal". "I don't want you to get me wrong.Being Aboriginal doesn't worry me. ....You see. I want to be myself. No one else. I hardly knew what an Aboriginal was until I came to Sydney. Back where I come from we were the only A family in town, and most of what I know about Aboriginals I leaned out of books."

Not since Althea Gibson in 1956 had someone won the French on her first attempt. After 3-3 in the first native Francoise Durr never gets another game, her worst ever defeat at RG. In her 9 game run Evonne lost only 20 points and faced a game point once. In the final fellow Aussie Gourlay lets 5 set points and a 5-2 advantage slip away.

A wild week, as the US media overuns Dallas in anticipation of Evonne meeting Chris. The fact that this is Evonne's first ever event in the USD also adds to the frenzy. In her first round match Goolagong is on the brink of defeat as Wendy Gilchrist got to 6-5 and deuce on Evonne's serve in the third.

The dream match is ruined when King beats Evert in the quarters. Billie Jean clearly asserts herself as a #1 contender for 1972 by also winning over Evonne. 'The Old Lady is not over the hill yet." King said afterwards.

A rainy week in Bournemouth. Evonne "delighting the corwd with her enterprise" according to the NYT, wins an easy 51 minute final over clay courter Mastoff. She lost only 14 points in the first set, and though Helga made a fight of it in the second the result was never in doubt.

The NYT reports Evonne looks "bored and lethragic" in scrapping through over Durr. She forgot her racqurts as she came out to the court and at one point tried to serve two games in a row. Durr served for the first set before Evonne"woke up" and came down from 2-4 in the second, "mercifully ending the match." On meeting Evonne for the 4th time Billie Jean predicts a fun match, saying she doesn't recall their first encounter. "A long long tiome ago in Australia. She tells me I beat her. I don't remember."

King brilliantly takes the final from Evonne, who fails to defend her first slam.
The self called "old bag" took the first set at 6-3, the first set Evonne had ever lost at the French. 12,000 watched "awed by women's tennis at it's finest."
A win in the mixed takes from of the sting away, featuring a 40 game semi vs Casals/Nastase.

Dramatic goings on at Hilton Hread, as Goolagong saves a match point form an impossible hole and comes back to defeat Gourlay. Gourlay had a mp at 7-6 5-0 and 40-30. Helen: "I was determined to win. A lot of people thought I had won a week ago only because she was injured."

Evonne: "I thought-god, a couple more day holiday."

Gourlay netted a ball on match point, and at deauce felt she was robbed when a Goolagong shot seemingly went long. Working her way back into the contest Evonne eventually prevailed.

Fellow Aussie Kerry Melville proves to be a thorn in Evonne's side once again.
Kerry uses hard crosscourt forehands then comes to net for the putaways.

This is as close as Evonne ever gets to winning a US Open crown. Seeded only 5 due to her upset loss to Melville at Wimbledon, she wins a tough quarter over Kerry. Next Goolagong wins a dramatic semi over Evert spanning two days due to rain. Only on her 5 th match point does evonne break Miss Evert's 56 match win streak. The final vs. King has the crowd on it's feet, both women sparkle as they rush the net. One point featuring at least 4 impossible gets earns a prolonged ovation form the New Yorkers.

It is said that Evonne is on a 20 match win streak since her loss in Canada.

Notes by Andy T

Just three months after the birth of her first child on 12 May, she returned to the circuit in August at the Canadian Open, where she lost to Katja Ebbinghaus in the first round 64 fs. Apart from the Hilton Head World Invitational, where she lost the final to Wade 63 fs, she did not play the circuit again until November. However, on rejoining the tour for the Australian season, she immediately embarked on a win streak of 20 consecutive matches winning four consecutive tournaments: Colgate Sydney (d. Mappin 61 61, Whytcross 63 62, Holladay 60 26 64, Fromholtz 76 61, Reid 61 63), Melbourne (d Coles 61 61, Hunt 63 61, Fromholtz 36 61 63, Stove 61 62, Turnbull 64 61), NSW (d ?R1, ?R2, Gourlay 63 46 63, Reid 46 62 63, Barker 62 63) and Australian Opens (d Evers 61 63, Sato 64 60, Tegart 63 61, Reid 61 63, Gourlay 63 60), and beating top ten players 8 times: Reid (#10) three times, Fromholtz (#8) twice, Stove (#7), Turnbull (#9) and Barker (#5). In spite of these results Lance Tingay of the British Daily Telegraph and most other experts did not rank her in their season-ending top 10 rankings. Nevertheless, at the beginning of 1978, she was re-established back among the top four in the world.

However, having reached the semi final as the only player not to have dropped a set, the tendinitis in her left foot which had been bothering her all year hobbled her in the climatic stages of her match against eventual champion Martina Navratilova and she lost 26 64 64. Despite two brief attempts to play during the latter half of 1978 - at Florida Federal Open (withdrew 1 match vs AM Fernandez and the Tokyo invitational - where she lost 63 62 to Navratilova - she missed the rest of the year, including the US Open and Colgate International Series Championships, through illness and injury.

Notes below from Andy T:)

In 1979, in spite of a series of niggling injuries which kept her off the circuit at the beginning of the year, she held her place in the women's top 4 in the world. In her first tournament of the year, at Hilton Head, she def. Stoll 60 46 75, Richards 62 75 and Stove 64 64 before being thrashed by Austin 06 16 in the semi-final . She beat Wade 64 60 but lost to Evert in the semi finals at Wimbledon (63 62). In the final of the US Clay Court championships, she was beaten 64 63 by Evert after having beaten Lewis 62 60, Nagelsen 60 61, Gilbert 62 61, A. Smith 64 46 63, and Marsikova 46 63 75. Evert beat her again in the quarter finals at the US Open (75 62). In the Autumn, however, she strung together some impressive wins: Having lost to King 46 57 in the final of the Japan Toray Sillook Open ( d Siegel 62 60, A. Smith 67 60 64, Reid 63 61, Kiyomura 75 75) and Navratilova 16 36 in sf Atlanta (d Dupont 64 64, Stuart 62 63, Kruger 61 62), she enjoyed two successive victories over reigning US Open champion Austin and Virginia Wade) to lift the US Indoor ( d Richards 64 62, Stove 63 76, Wade 64 64, Austin 76 60, Fromholtz 63 64) and Tampa (d Harford 61 61, Dupont 46 63 61, Turnbull 62 64, Austin 64 61, Wade 60 63) titles. Injuries again plagued her at the end of the year. Having beaten Walsh 62 26 62, she was forced to concede a walkover L16 v Wikstedt in Melbourne and missed the remainder of the Australian circuit, including the Australian Open.

In Landover Maryland at the Colgate Series Championships (Jan 80), she beat Marsikova 61 61 and lost to Navratilova 36 26 before retiring when trailing 1-2 against Turnbull.
