Another defeat snatched from the jaws of victory

To be fair, MLB hit a purple patch late in the third, but Katya definitely got tight (as usual). She suddenly couldn't put a first serve in, and her second serves kept getting slaughtered.

She beat Badosa 4 and 5, but then lost to Lucic after being up 51 in the third set (second time this year it happened to her) 26 62 67.

Obviously having some mental difficulties finishing off close matches. But also, on the positive side, she must be hitting the ball okay to get into a winning position.

Has probably the easiest R1 oppopent (Badosa) so should manage to win that one. Would then face Lucic who lost to Day last week so if she is beatable depending on what form she's in

Flopped in R1.

Had Q+R16 to defend, so her ranking will take a significant hit

^ I can see the family resemblance

Katya is playing the Premier event in Dubai this week

After beating Belarusian rising star () Aryna Sabalenka in a tough three-setter in R1, she faced fifth seed Muguruza who retired when Katya was up 4-1 in the first set

Wozniacki is next - I thought they had met before, but apparently I was wrong.

Re: Kateryna Bondarenko Cheering Thread!

Katya qualified for Premier Sydney main draw !

Q1: (5) Katya def. Tomova 6-3 3-6 6-1
Q2: (5) Katya def. Lucic 3-6 6-3 6-3
Q3: (5) Katya def. Broady 6-1 6-1

R1 vs McHale who seems on fire. Please win this match, Katya !

Re: Kateryna Bondarenko Cheering Thread!

Such a HUGE choke from Katya in Brisbane R1

Katya lost 6-7 7-6 6-7 in a very close match (as LL) to #8 seed Vinci

Set 1: Katya 5-3 (wastes 2 SPs !) -> 6-7
Set 2: 3-0 -> 3-3 -> 7-6
Set 3: 5-1 (wastes 5 MPs !) -> 6-7

The game is not a problem, the (lack of) mental strength is the problem !
(And of course the consistency during the year too)

Re: Kateryna Bondarenko Cheering Thread!

Pretty much. Sevastova played well from about 3-3 on.

Re: Kateryna Bondarenko Cheering Thread!

Katya lost to Sevastova in straigh sets, 4-6 1-6 (she was up a break twice in the first but couldn't hold serve)

I didn't see the whole match, but her game (and energy level) didn't seem quite there today, as if she hadn't quite recovered from that R2 epic. Her BH looked weaker than usual and her shots often lacked depth. Sevastova was controlling most of the rallies.
