Dementieva gives her OK – Clijsters celebrates a brilliant comeback

The QATAR TOTAL German Open, from 2nd to 8th May 2005, on the grounds of the LTTC „Rot-Weiss“, promises a line-up that belongs to the best that has ever been seen at the "Hundekehle". After the 23 year-old Elena Dementieva gave her OK on Friday, six of the seven top players on the WTA Tour now belong to the players list. The tableau of the tournament with a purse of 1.3 million Dollars is lead by the reigning champion Amelie Mauresmo (France/No. 2), followed by Maria Sharapova (Russia/No. 3), Serena Williams (USA/No. 4) and the three Russian girls Elena Dementieva (No. 5), Anastasia Myskina (No. 6) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (No. 7). In addition, as particular attractions, the two Belgians, Justine Henin-Hardenne, champion in Berlin 2002 und 2003, and Kim Clijsters - both former world's number one, are present. Both had to pause for a lengthy time due to injuries and in the coming weeks celebrate their return to the WTA Tour.

Kim Clijsters demonstrated with her sensational victory at the weekend in Indian Wells that she has not lost any of her skills. In the meantime ranked only No. 133 in the world, the 21 year-old beat the actual No. 1, Lindsey Davenport, in the final - despite trailing 0:4 behind in the first set, with 6:4, 4:6 and 6:2. „After all the problems I faced last year, it is an unbelievable feeling to make such a successful comeback in such a short time“, stated Kim Clijsters after her victory, who is unbelievably popular in Berlin. At the same time she shot up the world rankings by nearly 100 places.

Ayman Azmy Galal, Tournament Director of the QATAR TOTAL German Open in the German capital for the first time, was also thrilled. „My congratulations go to Kim Clijsters for this magnificant performance in Indian Wells and I really look forward to greeting her in May. We are certain that we can present a line-up to the Berlin public that guarantees tennis of the highest quality"
