Kerber not the only Grand Slam champion in town

By Stuart Fraser

Leipzig may be preparing to welcome an Australian Open champion in Angelique Kerber this weekend – but she is not the only Melbourne title winner in town for the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round tie between Germany and Switzerland.

Martina Hingis arrived in Leipzig on Wednesday just four days after winning her third consecutive Grand Slam women's doubles title with Indian partner Sania Mirza.

Hingis hit with Swiss teammate Belinda Bencic on the indoor hard court at the Leipziger Messe on Thursday and she is looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere the packed crowd will create this weekend for Kerber's homecoming.

Hingis said: "It's a nice setting. Once it's going to be packed, it's going to be a great atmosphere.

"It's going to be really good tie because Angelique is obviously in great form, winning the Australian Open and No. 2 in the world. She's the leader of the team.

“All the German hopes are with her on the team as a champion who also beat Serena Williams, the No. 1 player. It's a great moment to have it here.”

Hingis was full of praise for Kerber’s achievement in Melbourne, the German winning her first Grand Slam title after being a constant fixture in the top 10 in recent years.

Hingis said: “I was incredibly happy for her that she was able at the age of 28 to win a Slam. She was always a very good player but now she has made that step.

“I think the turning point was beating [Victoria] Azarenka [in the quarter-finals], a player who was on form, a Grand Slam champion. Beating her had a big impact and I think after that she started believing she can go further.”

But this weekend Hingis and Kerber will be battling it out on opposing teams and the former pointed out the notable 3-0 combined head-to-head record that Bencic and Timea Bacszinszy have over the German.

Hingis said: “We have a pretty good record against her, so hopefully we can build on that and go home as the winners.”

Unlike last year's World Group play-off against Poland when Switzerland were hit by an injury crisis, Hingis will not be required this time to play singles with Bencic and Bacsinzky, ranked No. 11 and No. 15 respectively, both fit for action.

Instead, Hingis will sit courtside on the opening day as Switzerland return to the World Group for the first time since 2004. The 35-year-old will likely only be required if the tie comes down to a deciding doubles rubber.

Hingis said: "It's really nice to go back up. The ladies, Timea and Belinda, have done most of the job to get up here.

"The last tie was really nerve-racking. It came down to the last few points. It was really nice to be part of the team again there and now joining the best of the best is pretty cool."

36th victory in a row, amazing!! In an interview given in Melbourne Martina Hingis told that she loved places like Melbourne and some Asian/Indian cities, and also St. Petersburgh where had played some exhibitions in the past; do you think she will take part in the competition this year? Next week she is going to play fedcup in Germany and then?
