Re: World rankings

Is there any way to get Career High rankings of old players (from the 70's or 80's for example) ?

And don't say Wikipedia please. Thank you !

Re: World rankings

Hi everyone!

Ooooohhh... another year with the most weighty tournaments is finished for now!
And I see that my results are totally different to all the other rankings posted for that year
(Goolagong at 1 there - winning Wimbledon can't be the only argument for that, Sharapova also won Wimbledon 2004 but wasn't at 1 for the year)

it was a very busy year 1971 for King, Casals and Durr with collecting an extraordinary sum of points I had never seen before.
But when I think about it: if Graf and the Williams sisters would play more than 30 tournaments a year and win most of them the sum would be similiar.

notable fact is that Court is still no.1 with the average points system (I don't like that system).

Welcome to the Blast Peter

Very interesting. Can you start a thread in the Blast? That would give us a space to go into more detail.

I have my rankings system. As you say, the toughest part is how to assign points.

I've posted your 1970 ranking in our rankings. I'm thinking we can include Blast member rankings with so-called expert rankings.

Elegos made some wonderful rankings for pre-World War I period. We have some of them in the first post. Hopefully he'll share more of these here.

Re: World rankings

Hi elegos7,

Also the most complicated question to me when starting the project.
I found out, that prize money cannot be the only fact to categorize a tournament before 1980, so the entry-list is important as well. It's a mix of both.
But there aren't all the details about every tournament I would need to make the best ratings, unfortunately.

Hi,

It is a great effort, I am interested in the outcome of subsequent years as well.
How did you award points to specific tournaments?
Was it only prize money, or did you take into account the quality of the entry as well?

I'm working on creating weekly rankings for the times before the WTA made any.
Here is a first step, a list made with 57 big tournaments of the year 1970.

Iva Majoli was in the top 10 the whole year, with a ranking high of #4 from February to November, no less! Yes, in 1996, one year before she wins the French.

Anyone checking these lists year after year would think Majoli only faired well in 97 for a lucky slam win. It's totally misleading!

The best way is to check the rankings month after month and make an average for each year.
It's a good point Hugues. I will also try to include the computer rankings in here for comparison.

Looking at Walkley's rankings. Hilarious he included Graebner. She had no decent results all year and didn't win a match at any Slam event except Walkley's home Aussie where she reached the semis in a far from stellar field. No one else included Graebner and she probably wasn't even top 30 for the year.

With the exception of Lenglen not at #1, this is a FAR more sensible list for 1926 than any I've seen published. Myers totally dropped the ball with his list, not even putting Wills in the top 10.
I second that. It was Wills misfortune to get sick in Paris, robbing the world of a potential rematch.

Leaving her off the world top ten entirely was another robbery! Perhaps the feeling was not playing a major=no ranking.
