Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

OK, thanks. I suspect this one is going to hurt, though, on a winning streak like that.

Anyway, a good week overall. Two singles and one doubles win, and vindication, if she needed it, that her game matches up well with players well into the top 100.

There was a short medical check and she was hitting the ball well from a couple of minutes I caught.
I suspect nothing serious is up with that. She's just not durable at all with kinda chronic back and energy issues.
Doha Q next.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

What the #e!! happened?

I was busy this afternoon, popped in to see Stef down 5-2, she broke back in fine style for 5-3, serve-volleyed to 40-0 and it was tempting to think "Ah, she's underway now".

Then I saw her face close up. She looked drained. Awful.
From 40-0 there were heaps of deuces and eventually he dropped serve again to lose the set 6-3.

Next time I come past the PC she's pulled the pin!

Exhaustion? An injury? Unwell?

Dispatched the moonballer. Order restored.
Normally she doesn't get good results in Asia even with mild draws and I was afraid this tournament might be canceled due to the earthquake last week.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Wow. Solid game from Stef! 6-4-6-4

Props to Qalahari, you called it on Tuesday.

That new serve is working well, 0 double faults, and that ability to win the points that count!

At the start of the match, Zheng got a few cheap points by moonballing Stef, partly as a tactic to get to the net.
But from halfway through the first set, Stef was meeting those balls above the shoulder and negated the tactic.

Zheng is dangerous anywhere near the net and Stef kept her away from it pretty well.

Toilet break & outfit change by Zheng after 1st set, the umpire offered Stef her coach on court, she immediately said yes please, and whatever he said to her (something in that incomprehensible Swiss-German no doubt!) she came out firing at the start of Set 2, just like in Round 1.

She's moving well, very well. The exhaustion of the last few days shows on her face - she's gone very dark under the eyes - but NOT around the court, where she's chasing balls down well, and staying on the front foot in baseline railles, pushing her opponent back.

Well done Stef! Proud of you.

Next up Yulia Putintseva, who Stef has beaten in the last 2 matches.

Gosh it has been ages since they played together. Maybe 2014 Luxembourg?? I don't know why they don't team up more often

Yeah I think she must be really tired today from yesterday's efforts. Hopefully she has legs tomorrow!

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Just saw the 2R=QF doubles result.

I'm afraid they got their arses kicked 6-3 6-1.

Didn't see the game, but it wouldn't surprise me if Stef was exhausted or stiff after yesterday.

Good partner.

I see her old mate Mandy is also in the draw; how long is it since they played together?

Edit: Just seen the scoreline - 6 sets in one day, the last 13-11! her muscles must have been screaming after that! And she backs up this afternoon in the doubles.
I know she's super fit, and nobody plays more tournaments than Stef, but sometimes it must catch up with her.

Big call, Zheng is 70 in the world and played in the Elite Trophy just a few months ago.

The one and only time they played, USO '14, Stef was the favourite and lost in 3 sets.

I like her recent form (awful first set this afternoon notwithstanding), and her tenacity and never-beaten attitude might just carry her through.

Fingers crossed!
