Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2

Straight set loss...her current live ranking is 110.

Showed some resistance against Keys, but far from making a statement. She is currently in a whole other league, especially on clay.

And speaking of clay, last year Donna's clay season ended with a w-l record of 6:7, this year she is at 0:6 and I assume she won't be playing any more matches on the surface this year.

Onto grass...

Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2

Looks like she is picking up her game, but it'll probably take a bit more until things definately click.

Game plan was good (dictating from the 1st shot, sending Stephens deep behind the baseline with powerful groundstrokes and opening the court), but the execution, apart from S1, wasn't where it should've been in order for her to win.

She did take however, a set off of a practically top 20 player and on her worst surface, so there's no reason not to see things positively for a change.

But now she really needs a kind draw, tough task ahead at the French. Hopefully this match made her realize she is not far from some good form. But for that to happen she'll need to work on consistency and find some more confidence.

Maybe Paris brings good things again.

You know Donna doesn't actually write those FB statements, right?

Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2

This article, while correct in many things and rightfully critical, does fail on some points.

First, it critisizes her most recent results, without respecting the fact that some players perform much better on one type of surface than on some other. Donna is one of those players. Prior to last year she had no WTA wins on clay and couldn't win on that surface against anyone remotely respectable.

Then last year, after splitting with Felgate the year before, she started working with John Evert (whom this article doesn't mention at all). Apparently his influence was such that, probably thrgough some changes in the training regime and some tweaks in the playing style, she started winning on clay. Not a lot, but she made some wins here and some there, enough to pick up some useful points along the way. He even extended her claycourt season with two more events after Wimbledon - something that was completely unimaginable only a year ago to anyone following Donna.

Consequently, as her game on clay improved, her game on the polar opposite - grass - suffered a bit last year, and results on this otherwise favorite and most successful surface for Donna, were below expectations.

This year, she is again working with Felgate, and results on clay are again nowhere to be found. But then, maybe results on grass will be surprisingly good (again). I see that as a possibility.

So, while it is true that in recent weeks her results were pretty terrible, the article also fails to mention that she has 10 wins on HC this year, that she qualified for 2 big events, or that she won 8 matches between Doha and Miami. For someone who was ranked at #177 a little over a year ago, that's not a bad first quarter of the year.

Sure, it'd be wonderful when she could win any match she wants or play equally well on every surface, but for many players, and Donna is obviously among those players, reality is much harsher. There are countless other examples in the world of tennis, from (mostly Spanish) claycourt specialists who avoided the grasscourt season altogether, to big servers or big hitters, who do their best to avoid every clay event they possibly can, to save their strength for those events where they stand a better chance at winning matches.

So I don't see things as *that* bad for Donna ATM, I agree that everything could be better and she should aspire to fix things that she can fix, but at her age (given the average age of tennis prime in women's game), there's still a world of possibilities ahead of her. Hope she makes good choices and works hard.

Speaking of which...seems like Donna is reacting to the article already
