I've posted the video of the last point in the videos folder here, so you can see that this was probably agreed upon ahead of the match, whoever gets to 5 first, gets the win.

Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2

After Canada, Donna is listed for the MD of Nanchang slam. Why am I not surprised...(granted, this is still Felgate's scheduling)

Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2

Talk about a bombshell

I googled a bit and found out that he was (or possibly still is, don't know) Croatian team captain for U-14 boys, and in a quick search I found THIS article that he wrote on the topic of development of young players, in Croatian.

Seems like a sensable and knowlegable guy. Will be interesting to see how all of this goes. Toronto is right around the corner (next week) and Donna is in the q-draw.

Donna just said in Umag that she has a new coach. It´s Nikola Horvat.

Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2

I think it is good she is training. Training is arguably more important than matches, and if it means she gets an extra win or two the ranking won't be affected.

Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2

I get it that Donna might be mentally drained after all the bad results over the past months, but why an extended break now of all times, when she finally showed something good in that match against Venus?

Her next event seems to be Montreal qualies, which start on July 23rd. Donna's last match was doubles with Dani on June 30th.

And yet, in the States the hardcourt season is about to take off, offering some events where Donna would have a chance to take some easy points home, namely Stockton and Sacramento 50k's on July 11th and 18th respectively.

Why not take that chance to bump up her ranking a bit, now when she seems to be finding her game again?

Not to mention that the 18th also lists Stanford and Washington on the regular tour, both of which she could've easily entered, maybe even MD for the former.

But, guess the most important thing is that she comes back playing well, whenever the return actually happens.

Venus: "Yeah, I mean, she hit more winners than I did. She seemed to track down every ball that I hit, produced a lot of winners.

When I go out to play my matches, I definately expect my opponents to play well, so that's kind of a given. If she can build on that play, you know, that will be very great for her for the rest of the year."

Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2

Haven't been posting much because of exams, but had to say how proud I was of Donna. Really never let the situation get the better of her, and although she didn't take some of her opportunities, she kept giving it her all and trying to make more chances. Hopefully she takes a lot of confidence and doesn't slump again. The talent is still very much there, and maybe it was just me but I was really impressed with her movement and anticipation, so great to see that that has improved as well

Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2

Proud of Donna. One of her better performances, especially on grass, this year. Against such a big champ you do have to hope Venus doesn't play her best, and she didn't. And Donna took advantage of it in moments, especially in set 1. But since Donna isn't mentally match tough this year, it was always going to be hard.

I never would've expected her to have set points against Venus today... no way. A tight 76 64 is better than expected, and she did well. She just wasn't clutch when she needed to be, which is no surprise to me. I am happy to see an improvement

Hope the hard courts start treating her well for the rest of the year.

Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2

One of the commentators noted how negative her body language became after losing the first point at *4-3 in the first set. Then she double-faulted twice and broke herself in under a minute...

I did not get to watch much of this match, only *4-3 until the tiebreak. She was playing ok, but played with no confidence on the important points. She missed a backhand down-the-line by inches on set point.

Re: Donna Vekic - Volume 2

Two things she did really well today (two that come to mind, at least) - she tactically did good by puting those big shots mid-court a few times before sending a winner to the sides, which worked very well a number of times, and also she didn't back down at the start of the second set, of which I was afraid. Even far more experienced players would drop in game and spirits big time after losing that 1st set, but she kept going really well.

Considering with what sort of form she came to this tournament, I think her whole camp can be very satisfied with her performance today.
