Re: Irina Maria Bara

Should go find a koala bear for a quick before she leaves. Good learning experience, even if she didn't have the best results

Re: Irina Maria Bara

Turns out Down Under is not really a smurftastic place after all Smurfette only managed a single win in her trip and in Perth she only won a combined three games and was served two bagels before retiring in the second week. Only highlight of her trip was the dubs final she played with Thombare.... and also her new CHR #237

$25.000 Perth 1 (AUS)
R32: Kristie Ahn (USA) d. Irina Maria Bara (ROU) 60 62

Dubs R16: (1)Bara/Thombare (ROU/IND) d. (wc)Jovanovic/Walters (AUS/AUS) 63 61
Dubs QF: (1)Bara/Thombare (ROU/IND) d. (Q)Bains/Tere-Apisah (AUS/PNG) 46 62 10-7
Dubs: SF: (1)Bara/Thombare (ROU/IND) d. Elie/Reix (USA/FRA) 64 64
Dubs final: (2)Namigata/Sawayanagi (JPN/JPN) d. (1)Bara/Thombare (ROU/IND) 76(5) 46 11-9

$25,000 Perth 2 (AUS)
R32: (Q)Katarina Zavatska (UKR) d. Irina Maria Bara (ROU) 60 21 Ret.

Dubs R16: Gumulya/Rompies (INA/INA) d. (2)Bara/Thombare (ROU/IND) 76(5) 76(1)

Re: Irina Maria Bara

Yeah... and her opponent then withdrew like an hour later after the first set of the QF

Well, off to Perth now for the two consecutive 25k's.

Re: Irina Maria Bara

Had 6-2 4-2*, 30-15 vs. Dunne but then lost 9 games in a row and the match eventually ...

At least she'll achieve a new career high on Monday . A couple of Australian 25Ks next.

Re: Irina Maria Bara

And she would have gotten in .

But another inside info that I got in the meantime mentioned she didn't receive her visa for Australia yet (as she's indeed scheduled to play Aussie ITFs from the 30th of January) . IDK if she would have made the trip even with the visa though.

Re: Irina Maria Bara

OMG so close, yet so far..... like 15.000km far

When I first read that she was going to Aussieland in this period, I thought she was planning on going to the Open as well. I'm pretty sure even as an alternate you can sign in and use the practice courts, see some matches and just enjoy the time there at the venue. But ofc that would have meant also two additional weeks of accommodations and expenses in Melbourne she would have had to pay from her own pocket

Re: Irina Maria Bara

Why aren't those Aussie ITFs sooner ? .

She might have made the Aussie Open qualies if they were. She's the 5th Alternate now and will be 3rd after Mertens and Cepede will get removed and 2nd Alt if Fett also wins in a few hours, but my inside source from Melbourne said that Irina will not make the trip !

Those damn ITFs being so late might have impacted in a big way the injury of Buzarnescu last year (apart from not making the QD). Cause Brazil might have not existed if it were different ...

Love it

According to her dad, strumfita will start the season playing the aussie pro circuit after the Open. Should be quite an experience for her. So good luck, have fun and hopefully add some points

Re: Irina Maria Bara

She is Smurfette in that pic. I vote we switch her nickname from Gabi Ruse's veverita to strumfita.

Agreed this was by far her best season on the tour. Didn't think she would get this close to Slam qualifying, but she got there playing smart tennis & using her good touch. Think some of the let-down at the end must be brought on by how tired you'd get after a long season. Fingers crossed she comes back strong to start off 2017.

Re: Irina Maria Bara

Despite another loss in France, Irina finishes 2016 with a really good year-end ranking inside the top250 (#244) and close to top150 in dubs (#151) Definitely had a very good year, winning her biggest title in both singles (25k Hodmezovasarhely) and dubs (100k Sharm El Sheikh), and generally playing very good, solid tennis throughout. Won't be easy next year trying to improve even more and move closer to top 100, maybe even play some slam qualies... but Irina always seems to find a way to surprise people
