Yes true, we need to get Conchita back asap!

I don't think people are being pessimistic, just trying to be realistic about what they saw out there. She did not look spectacular (not even for the 2017 Grinderuza that we've seen at times), so I don't think it's a good idea to make a lot of heady predictions when we can see that her level look okay, but not spectacular.

Do I think she can pick it up and possibly win? Sure. But I for one do not like being a fan who makes a lot of grandiose predictions about a player when I honestly don't think she's playing at her best level.

No one seems to be saying she's playing terrible tennis, just that realistically speaking she's going to have to pick it up against Pliskova and if she wants to advance to the SFs and/or Finals. She certainly is capable of it, I just don't like predicting something I have yet to see in this tournament.

Re: Garbiñe Muguruza

Well i dont know why so many are pessimistic here. Certainly she wasnt playing top match but a win is a win. She knows how to win ugly, and why not success is success. She was really playing smart and it was wise move not to try to overpower a bully like Ostapenko. No need to.

But i didnt see anything like she was physically or especially mentally unfit out there. Well some arguments she didnt smile or similar, she always is serious on court i cant remember when she was smiling during a match anyway so i dunno. She looked pretty well during on court interview. I wanna be optimistic and believe she will finish 3:0 this group what she certainly has capability to do so. I do understand most want 2015 Garbi back but believe me when i say that Garbi wouldnt win matches like she did today and would easily fold against Plisko again but this one certainly wont. Nowadays she knows to play different opponents in a way that is needed to win and not hit like a maniac on every ball no matter what. Is much much smarter.

I do believe that Ostapenko is like Garbi was 2 years ago and will have to learn to play with some margin with time if she wants to be on top consistently. Garbi is not making same errors again she is learning with time and becoming a real top player who will hold and lead the tour for many years to come and i like this image of her and attitude.

Re: Garbiñe Muguruza

I also thought Garbiñe did not look 100% in this match. But at the same time, I'm glad she didn't try to outgun Ostapenko. Slow and steady won the race here, and it seemed like a big mental victory for her as well. Which I find interesting considering she has only lost to Ostapenko the one match in Wuhan.

I did get the sense that if she had lost this match, Ostapenko might start getting into her head the way some of the other big hitters seem to.

As for her next match... Pliskova looks great, Muguruza not as much. I, too, miss her old game, but she's shown us several times this season that she can switch gears and play forward-moving aggressive tennis, so who knows what to expect from this matchup. I like Garbiñe's chances against Venus more than I do Pliskova, but we shall see.

Re: Garbiñe Muguruza

I get increasingly bored watching her play. Over time Sumyk has developed her into this high percentage grinder, who is admittedly more even-keeled, but has lost the willingness to take big risks from the baseline. I really miss the all out bashing Mugu from 2015, but the Azarenka style grinding is winning her plenty of matches and big titles. I don't know if that's because of the weakened state of the tour or if the courts have gotten so slow it's necessary to be more defensive and prioritize consistency. She seems content with Sumyk and got to #1 with this game so why fix what's not broke I guess. Interested in the Pliskova match, I like their budding rivalry and I feel like we're always learning something new about Garbine in their matches.

Re: Garbiñe Muguruza

Should have been easier, but she almost messed it up again . Apart from that, not a very bad performance, considering this was a first match against someone she had lost to a few weeks ago, Jelena hit or miss gamestyle, and how hard is to have high quality matches on this slow court, but indeed far from impressive, something like a 6/10.Playing like this no way she will beat KP.

I was wondering about this too. I don't want to sound like a Halep fan, seeing career/life defining "omens" for her fave in the most ordinary gestures, but she's been looking far too serious, with sleepy eyes and hardly smiling at all.

Re: Garbiñe Muguruza

First and second serves were great....everything else not so much. Just solid, but whenever Aljona was hitting well Garbine had no answers. Still not convinced on that FH grip, everything landing too short.

Very good win she seemed fit and composed although that small choke at the end of 2nd set did get on my nerves a bit. I nearly got those Pliskova vibes from last year!

Now dont screw this up Garbiñe and look to seal it in next round already!

That should not be an issue for Garbine. She needs to win today. I am 90% sure she will win again vs. Venus, so that should be it should she beat Aljona. Against Plisko it will be a good fight of two inform top players i suppose and as long she is winning other two i wont be bothered with a loss either.

I am just not sure are winners of this 1R playing winners next round and losers the losers or is schedule already determined?

Venus i predict will be beaten by all 3 youngsters here so Garbi needs this first win which is very important. If she wins today she is through.

Personally I am worried about Garbean, she hasn't looked herself the last few days off court. She seems unhappy. I hope she is ok.

I do agree she could have a bit easier group though, maybe only Svito rather than Pliska, but Venus is far better choice than CaroWoz and Ostapenko is easier opponent than this renewed Caro G for sure. Now it is up to Garbiñe. Lets see. I just wanna see her in final with Garcia then i am happy!
