I couldn’t see the second set, but in the first set Garbi was very impressive. She was hitting from both wings with full conviction. It looked like she got her champions aura back at the very moment she stepped onto Philippe Chatrier.

It seems that our Spanish Queen is back.

Sumyk is dead wood and the sooner she drops him the better.
Is there any reason why she keeps Sumyk around, apart from winning the FO with him, I mean in spite of him? Any interviews / explanations ever given?

Re: Garbiñe Muguruza

I have no idea about Garbi's chances. On paper clay favors her more natural and instinctive aggressive game instead of her lame pushing/grinding; she can defend better and her FH is not so prone to be exposed by big hitters, as beating Ostapenka, Georges and Venus in Rome proved. Not having to interact and exchange all that negative energy with Sumyk should help her too, but Sexa is experienced and tricky. Not the easiest of first rounds. She can play every shot on clay, and if Garbiñe has one of her "difficult" days she could well make Garbi hit herself out of court. Also Junkulescu and of course Kontaveit, who has improved so much lately, will be tough too, but I think the outcome of those matches will still depend mostly on what version of Garbiñe shows up. Would love to see a 4th round with Mladenovic. If someone is going to win a first GS I would like it to be her of Svitolina (if only for her lovely smile).

Re: Garbiñe Muguruza

RG is Garbi's best slam ,apart from her first apperance there (the only time she beat KaPlis ) she has now made at least QF 3 times in a row, Francesca is a winnable opponent albiet can be tricky and who knows about Kontaveit I wouldn't discount Nicolescu winning that match.

I am so not here for Kiki and Garbi to be in the same part of the draw I hoped both could make a run here.

Re: Garbiñe Muguruza

I also have faith in our Mugu, she is starting to be more consistent on slams lately and has done always very well in Paris also prior to her maiden slam. We are quickly forgetting that she was QF at AO where she always flopped year after year. After seeing how many players got injured lately, I think it is very wise from her to retire that last match and to not worsen her injury.

First round is bit tricky and then I would expect her to take revenge on Annet in the 2nd round since she rarely loses to same player back to back (except Pliskova )

IMO Kiki Mlad will be first bigger test for her.

Re: Garbiñe Muguruza

I think Garbine has a chance! Updated my username to give her good energy because she'll need it. Kontaveit is ok, but Garbine shouldn't be losing to her, and the conditions here are way better for our Spanish Amazon Warrior Princess.

Re: Garbiñe Muguruza

Kontaveitt in second round is a big test to see her level here

Schiavone is tricky for first round but honestly she should never lose that match. Who knows anymore with her though

R3 should be easier unless Vikhlantseva starts peaking

Even on slow clay I'm relieved Pliskova is in other half

Safe to say she will not defend her RG title with that draw

WTA Insider said it's neck injury. What is it with Spanish players and neck injury. I remember CSN had one in Antwerp final, where Saint Kim took over her place and schooled the tournament winner, Petkovic in a exho match

ugh, the moment you hate it when you're right.
Muguruza is turning into Stan-Kei hybrid version of WTA. Random peaking with random injuries the entire season. Mess. Girl, those unnecessary grinding is bad for your body
