Update

Bromfield, Edith Jane
United Kingdom
Born in 1874 in Honiton, Devon
Died [in 1952 in Exeter, Devon]

Probably did not marry. Daughter of John Pidgeon Bromfield, a draper/grocer, and Jane Bromfield (née MacKno), both of whom were also natives of the market town of Honiton in Devon. The family later moved to London. In the 1901 Census of England Edith is living in Wimbledon with her widowed mother and an elder brother, Ernest.

The death of a 78-year-old Edith J. Bromfield was registered in Exeter, Devon, during the fourth quarter of 1952.

RUTH HANDE AND ADRIAN COX

Re Ruth Hande would agree she was American as can confirm this from World Tennis magazine November 1964 which has all the results in.

Re Adrian Cox, don't have any magazines with early round results from 1966 US Championships but agree that Alison Cox was the likely player. By that stage she was married to Mark Cox. Doubt whether any player would have played twice. With a no show a replacement would have been found or there would have been a walkover.

Thanks for looking into this for me.

Hi Rosamund

I will try and investigate both these cases this evening.

QUERIES

Looking at the Grand Slam Record Book re the 1964 US Championships Pat Stewart beat Ruth Hande in the 1st round. Somewhere i have her as Mrs Ruth Hande from Norway. Is this correct?

World Tennis, October 1964 issue, page 81.

This sources has Pat Edrich (nee Stewart, but married by this point) beating Ruth Hande, with no indication Hande was from Norway.

The New York Times Indicates Ruth Hande came from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Perhaps you were thinking of Ruth Haukenes?

See: By, ALLISON D. "Misses Eisel and Heldman Gain in Title Tennis at Forest Hills." New York Times (1923-Current file): 37. Sep 03 1964. ProQuest. Web. 6 June 2016

Nicely caught Rosamund

Per the New York Times it should be Maylis Burel (Fra) d. Patricia Cody 6-2 5-7 6-1

BUT

The NYT has Pat Cody (from Bell, California) losing twice in the opening round! Is the even possible? Could she have lost then have been reentered in the draw as a lucky loser when another entrant dropped out? This is so unusual surely it would have been mentioned somewhere. World Tennis has Adrian Cox, a male name. Mark Cox and his wife Alison Stround Cox were in the Husband/Wife event. This strongly suggests that "Adrian Cox" was in fact Alison Cox.

What do you think?
