Serena Spends The Day With New Mom Azarenka

After winning her record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title, Serena Williams met up with on-court rival and off-court friend, former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka, who recently had her first child.

Not long after winning her record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, Serena Williams met up with a player who knows plenty about what it takes to win in Melbourne.

Victoria Azarenka won back-to-back major titles in Australia back in 2012 and 2013, but sat out the first Grand Slam of 2017, having given birth to son Leo in late December.

Serena and Azarenka have played some of the best matches in the last few years, including a thrilling three-setter in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Wimbledon Championships. Their most recent encounter came last spring, where Azarenka got the upper hand to win the first leg of her Sunshine Double at the BNP Paribas Open.

Off the court, however, it's all love:

I always enjoy our meetings on and off the court! Always love for @ serenawilliams #manymoretocome

The Belarusian remains optimistic of a comeback, writing on social media that she hopes to extend her rivalry with the World No.1 on the court in the future.

Azarenka has undoubtedly remained plugged into the sport even from afar, congratulating Serena on her seventh Australian Open title on Twitter not long after the final:

Miss Serena @SERENAWILLIAMS 23 quite a magic number! Bravo!!! Congrats to Venus as well and your family and your team!

Azarenka Checks In With Tennis Channel

Former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka caught up with Tennis Channel ahead of giving birth to her first child, and updates fans on her life and plans to return to tennis.

Victoria Azarenka was the story of 2016's first quarter. The two-time major champion and former World No.1 rocketed back up the rankings after several seasons of injuries and inconsistencies, winning three titles and becoming the first woman in over a decade to capture the elusive Indian Wells-Miami "Sunshine" Double.

By spring, however, the Belarusian was gone from the game, announcing that she would end her season due to a pregnancy. Azarenka has since been busy preparing for the birth of her first child, but nonetheless granted an interview with Tennis Channel to update fans on her life today.

"My pregnancy's been a completely different experience from anything I've done before," she says. "In theory, you know the process, but to actually go through it, you truly start to deeply understand the magic of it. It's been quite a ride, I have to say.

"Tennis is my career, but there's a different part of life. This was a blessing, a gift from God. I believe I still have a great opportunity to do what I love, as long as I love playing tennis. I do, and this is an opportunity to realize how much I love what I do."

Azarenka has dedicated her time off to her studies, but has still found time to exercise, playing tennis up to the last six weeks of her pregnancy.

"I'm doing a lot of activities I didn't have time to do before; being at home and sleeping in my own bed is really a luxury for a travelling athlete.

"I miss the fans. I miss that moment when you go on the court and it's a go time. As a competitor, I have to find that edge in life. I've been able to translate that into my studies for now, but that competitive edge is definitely something I'm missing."

Addressing the question of a comeback, she gave fans reason to be optimistic that she'll be back on the court sooner, rather than later.

"I don't feel I'm missing out on something I won't be able to do again. For me, it's about getting to where I want to be and be back there again. That's my ultimate goal.

"I don't put any time frame on myself. I would love to make it as soon as possible, but give myself a reasonable time to fully recover and be ready. I'm not going to rush anything, and it's hard to tell before the birth actually happens. So, we'll see, but I'm confident that I'll be able to play tennis again pretty soon."

Re: News and updates about Victoria Azarenka

New interview for Enjoy.

Victoria Azarenka watching, waiting and tweeting

A world away at her parents' house in Belarus, the woman who beat Kerber at the 2015 US Open will be watching. The 27-year-old Victoria Azarenka is a former No. 1 and a two-time US Open runner-up. She had won three titles this season and was 2-1 against Kerber.

That was before she found out she was pregnant.

"It was interesting. It's tough to describe that," Azarenka said of learning that she and her boyfriend would be parents by the end of the year. "I don't think you can ever prepare yourself for that. It was just great for me to have such a positive response from my friends and my family. That just made me very comfortable because obviously you feel scared no matter what. ...

"But at first, it's not just me as a person, it's me as a tennis player, as a businesswoman, so these [factors] were taken into consideration.

Since stepping away from the Tour in July, Azarenka has made a routine out of not having a daily routine.

Because one day she can feel drastically different than the next, she is changing up her workouts and only playing tennis occasionally. She was playing three times a week with a friend, but she toned that down at her doctor's urging. "I can't leave that competitiveness feeling out of me," she said.

"The last time we played it got a little too intense, so my doctor told me to relax. They said I need to slow down. It's just who I am to be like that, but I just need to do a better job at that now."

The two-time Australian Open champion, who was ranked No. 6 when she stepped away, will begin taking classes at UCLA in a few weeks, working toward a degree in business. Calling it something she has wanted to do for some time, Azarenka has five years to complete the flexible program geared to those who are already in the working world.

She even toyed with the idea of going to Flushing Meadows to watch the US Open in person, but decided to spend some time in Belarus with her American boyfriend instead.

"We're just doing a lot of regular daily activities," she said. "I'm still working out, but most of the time, it's just quality time with my family and working on some ideas off-court and getting into some other things that I don't normally have time to."

Despite the seven-hour time difference between Belarus and New York, Azarenka still has watched much of the US Open -- and shared her observations on Twitter.

Calling it an "educational" experience, Azarenka is relishing in the rare opportunity to be a spectator. Knowing she will one day be back competing, and that she isn't missing out on an opportunity she won't have again, has allowed her to enjoy watching as a fan.

"I'm obviously not as attached as I normally would be before, but I actually feel a lot more engaged," said Azarenka, who fell in love with Arthur Ashe Stadium in 2005 when she won the juniors title as a 16-year-old. "When you just play for yourself, you mostly focus on yourself, and you really don't get to watch many other matches. I never even look at the draw. This is probably the first time I've looked at the draw, both men's and women's, and tried to follow my friends and see what's happening.

"I've also been listening to a lot of commentary and some shows. When you play, you really just want to block out all that noise. It's been interesting to see this different dynamic."

I don't want to rush anything, but I want to absolutely make sure that when I do come back, I'm as determined as I was before.
Victoria Azarenka
Interesting, maybe, but one that she hopes doesn't last long. Azarenka plans to resume competitive training as soon as possible after the birth of her child and return to the Tour sometime next year.

"I hope I'll have enough time to be ready and feel good about playing in New York next year," she said.

Returning after pregnancy certainly won't be easy, but it's not unprecedented, either. Kim Clijsters came back to the sport in 2008, one year after the birth of her daughter. She went on to win two more US Open titles and one at the Australian Open. Azarenka hasn't had a chance to speak to the retired Belgian star, but hopes to in the near future.

Among the tips Clijsters could potentially share is the answer to a relatively simple, yet crucial, question: Where are the daycare facilities at the tournaments located? Azarenka doesn't know now, but she knows she's going to have to find them and get used to the reality of being a working mom traveling all over the globe.

She's certain there will be help along the way.

"Serena texted me to say she can't wait to meet my baby, so maybe she'll want to babysit once in a while," she said with a laugh.

While it is impossible to pinpoint exactly when she will return, she does know one thing. She will definitely be back and with just as much as fire and dedication as ever before.

"The beauty of tennis is, there's always next year. And, for that matter, there's always next week. I don't want to rush anything, but I want to absolutely make sure that when I do come back, I'm as determined as I was before."

Interesting that she is planning to do a degree in Business. I hope it goes well for her and she can graduate in the future.
