She wasn't returning badly. Actually overall did just as well as Nastia. A couple of telling stats:

Receiving points won:
Eli - 56/129 (43%)
Pavs- 38/86 (44%)

Break points won:
Eli - 5/19 (26%)
Pavs - 6/9 (67%)

Nastia had way more close games than Eli. Look at the total number of receiving points played - 129 vs only 86. Problem was Nastia more often than not won the game anyway, even when it was close. She was just more clutch and it only took one break difference to win the match.

Speed-wise their first serves are actually remarkably similar. But on the 2nd serve Nastia's is 10-20mph quicker.

Dont know why she hits the short balls up the middle, thats the sort of thing Quitova and Pliskova enjoy

Re: Elina Svitolina Cheering Thread!

She started off just trying to purely counterpunch in this match. Standing quite far back. Pavs was in the zone from the off, hitting deep powerful groundstrokes and also making excellent use of the dropshot which was working for her time and again. Too many unforced errors from Eli as well.

In the second set Elina changed tactics, started to be more aggressive, not putting so many short balls up the middle, and it worked. 15 winners to 8 unforced errors. It was still close but the momentum was with her and Pavs was rattled.

Third set however Eli was really struggling to get her first serve in. And Nastya was absolutely crushing her second serve which she'd pretty much been doing all match. Unfortunately she was getting a lot more opportunities now. Eli was audibly giving more effort on the second serve to try to impart more spin for some kick but too many times it seemed to be in Nastya's hitting zone. The fact that her 2nd serve was so vulnerable was almost making Elina nervous on her first which may be why she was missing more. And the momentum swung back to Pavs who was playing really well off both wings and at net. It was hard for Eli to keep up resistance. Nastya's game was just on.

It was such a close match. I think maybe if Elina had been more aggressive and stood closer in to the baseline from the start she may have just edged one or two games and changed the outcome.

Agreed. I thought Boserup came out strong, was hitting some very deep returns and Elina was a little guilty of letting her opponent dictate too much. She was also making a few more errors than I think she'd be comfortable with. She wasn't making a lot of first serves early on either which definitely let Boserup make inroads into her service games.

Definitely improved overall in the second set. Still not serving great. But reigned in the errors and was hitting some very nice volleys.

An okay performance but I'm sure she knows she can do better.

Elina

She was too passive early on for my liking, but she became more assertive in the second set.

I really liked the way she didn't give up on the game at 5-1*, when Boserup was up 40-0 on her own serve: it was nice to see Elina clawing her way back into the game and finishing her off right there with some nice shots. She was basically telling her opponent, Nadal-style: you're never safe when playing against me. That's a good mentality.

Well this result was one bit of brightness in a fairly bad day for my faves. Score looks good. She didn't get broken.

Elina def. Voskoboeva 6-0 6-2

A serviceable performance, but there's definitely room for improvement. The match was closer than the scoreline suggests (Galina won 48 points). Not the best quality overall, but conditions were hot and windy.
