Re: Patricia Maria Tig

Maybe Doha Q would have been better for her, instead of FC. Or maybe it's the opposite.

But she might have not made the trip to Doha because of some visa / passport problems AFAIK. Good luck with the rest of the girls I guess . After FC , Dubai qualies is next for her.

Would have almost surely gotten in Budapest MD had she stayed there, but she chose Dubai after all.

Interesting fact also, which puzzles me : Most of our girls know very little about their schedule in advance, except a very general idea. They let their coach / manager handle it all and they are let know after a good while what's up.

Re: Patricia Maria Tig

Given her red hot form... she was logically called up for to the FED Cup team Seems to be more Niculescu's hitting partner atm but at least she can get a taste of the FED Cup atmosphere.

Retired in St. Petersburg qualies, trailing 26 14 against Sharipova. Apparently again back problems like she mentioned in Melbourne

Re: Patricia Maria Tig

Found an article with some quotes from Patricia after this loss. Very surprising that she says she had a minor surgery in the off-season and basically lost the whole month of december (I thought she was in Florida and Thailand in that period ). Also had back problems in the last days, didn't know if she can play but on court felt pretty good.

Patricia ?ig: "Chiar dac? demonstrez ceva oamenilor, e egal cu zero. Dac? n-am eu încredere în mine, degeaba. Mie trebuie s?-mi demonstrez"

I mean yes, there are two, three, four, five tournaments in a year where I play good, because, well, the game clicks after so many months of work. This is ok. But with this you only stay around #100. For more you need more.
Good observation in the last couple of years since playing WTA's she had basically just a few tournaments where she had good runs (Baku - Madrid - Seoul) and not much else going into her ranking. We had this discussion here as well a while back...

And also I panic, that I lost in Shenzhen, after that because Pironkova beat me in Sydney. Actually it's not that I lost, but that I beat myself, you understand? Ok, today she beat me. But maybe it's the first match in so many time when somebody beats me
I don't like this attitude

I don't think we particularly disagree, but we sure look at things from pretty different angles.

Betting odds, "objective measures"... 99% of that is based on ranking, h2h history and recent performances. Oh, and there's a lot of herding too: betting on the player that other seem to be betting on.

I'm not saying I would have bet on Rogers. Simo was the favorite.

My point was slightly different:
- Simo "has it in store" to lose to a wide range of players. You can't say the same about Serena, Maria or even Vika, whose weaknesses leave less room for scrubs to beat them.
- Shelby "has it in store" to beat Top10 players, particularly those with weaknesses like Simo has (which these days it's almost every girl in Top10)

Yes, by "objective measures" Simo had more chances. But those chances were still 10 times smaller than if she would have had to face Serena for example. Knowing Simona well (like I believe I do) and seeing what Shelby can produce, I was able to see all the "worse case scenarios" (injury-aside) and they were pretty realistic, enough for me to humble down and brace myself for anything today. Being convinced of Simo's victory today to me feels like either superficial (which is perfectly understandable if you're not a big fan... like I expect Mugu or Kerbi to do well here, but also because I don't follow them close enough to know of signs they may not) or, if you would be a big fan, one of the following: enthusiastic horse-blinded perception, or arrogance. I strongly doubt it's the latter in your case. Still... put yourself in my shoes: I see the disaster coming (or its "good odds" at least, again, I wasn't saying she will lose for sure), I say something about it, people disapprove of my post, reality proves me right, then people still argument why they were right at the time about their statements. Sorry, nothing personal - really - just something I've been facing a lot in the past in Simo's subforum, that makes it more and more difficult for me to find a corner on this forum where I'm comfortable... too many posts here are driven by enthusiasm, patriotism, statistics, or likes/dislikes while, for my taste, too few appear to be driven by facts-only (and when they are, they seem to irritate people). Enthusiasm, patriotism and likes/dislikes can drive my hopes, but only that.

Yeah, when I took a look at the stats on the ausopen website, I was surprised at how few winners Puig had (7 groundies + 1 dropshot). Just from the scoreline I was expecting to be quite a lot (even for just 13 games)

I think we can never humble enough when it comes to our Romanian girls... For most of them the gap between their highest peak and lowest low is huge. We can always hope, but can never be certain.

I was like "just let her have one game" but she was continuosly fist-pumping and yelling "come on" ... . And a couple of easy UEs also from Patricia and a couple of very good serves from Puig.

But didn't saw much more than that.
