Think that first set took something like nineteen minutes so thought this would be a quick one. But Alexandrova played a lot better in the second. Her serve looked like quite a weapon. When it was working.

Some good play from Katya. Plenty more points to defend though.

Kate defeated Katya, 60 46 61. A bit of a hiccup in the second; couldn't recover after getting broken early on, but eventually recovered in the third.

Not much to remember on the singles front in 2016. But we are optimistic - as we are in Melbourne.

A match between the WTA Finals winner/AO finalist and the True Queen of Melbourne (no offence Angie) could be one to remember. Assuming they both get that far.....

Re: Ekaterina Makarova making waves Thread

Last year, Kate's confidence seemed to me to be shattered after losing what she and we then thought to be a very winnable 4th round against Konta.

With 12 months' hindsight, given what JoKo has achieved since, it looks a different story. She should now look back and congratulate herself for pushing Konta that hard.

But I still think our Ekat has it in her to be a top 10 player.

If only she could play on greentops like the early rounds of Wimbledon last year all the time.

Fingers crossed, lovely lady!

Very tough section, in Serena's quarter. But she is capable of winning these 3 matches

AO main draw:

(6)Dominika Cibulkova v Denisa Allertova
Karin Knapp v Su-Wei Hsieh
Sara Errani v Risa Ozaki
Ekaterina Alexandrova v (30)Ekaterina Makarova

GL to Katya! Fourth round points to defend. Tricky first round.

They made the doubles final in Brisbane, a good prep for Melbourne, then lost the final
Now in Sydney and hopefully can be in good singles & doubles form for Melbourne

Katya starts her year in Brisbane:

Pliskova (3) vs Putintseva
Qualifier vs Vedic (WC)
Makarova vs Doi
Tsurenko vs Vinci (8)

Katya is 1:0 against Misaki, but this is their first meeting on hardcourt.

2016 is the second year that Katya has finished in the Top 30, will she ever reach the heights of the Top 10 again?

On November 21, the XXIII awards ceremony of the annual national tennis award the Russian Cup was held in the conference room of the Radisson Slavyanskaya Hotel. This award has been long called the “Oscar in tennis”.
The culmination of the ceremony and its final chord was when Rio Olympic champions in doubles Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova who adorned the ceremony in all the ways came on stage. “It was a remarkable year for Russian tennis and so it was for me and Kate. Though we are so different, we have many views and opinions that unite us completely. The Olympic Games have always been the top priority for us. We have been dreaming about it all our lives. And when we won we were filled with joy. I hope that our victory will help the would-be tennis players to believe in their dream, not to give up and to know and hope that they will reach the top if they work really hard,” Elena Vesnina said not forgetting to thank, as she called them, “the home front”, meaning all nearest and dearest and coaches who were supporting them throughout their carrier.
