Hmm we can only speculate. Sonya - please tell us something!

Maybe she's hampered physically? As she hasn't said anything on social media it's hard to actually work out what's wrong :-/

I think she made a mistake rushing in the IMG bandwagon, she didn't need that, had a great structure around her already. These IMG tools keep having their clients prematurely burn their wings...

Ok maybe I'm being harsh on both. Shaffer's won five matches already this week so she's obviously doing something right.

And maybe we're expecting too much from Sonya on her first tournament back after a long layoff? She's heading to Austin, Texas next. She definitely needs to do better there.

Re: Sofya Zhuk

Gah, bad loss for Sonya.

R2: K. Shaffer (Q) def. [8] S. Zhuk 4-6 6-1 7-6(5)

Seems like a match of wildly swinging momentum. No idea what happened in the second set. Sonya came back from *2-5 down in third.

She was two points from the loss at 3-5* and broke back. Then saved a match point serving at *4-5. Broke again and served for the match at *6-5 and of course got broken.

Then she was down 2-6 in the tiebreak and looked to be making a comeback getting to 5-6* when Shaffer clinched it on her fifth match point.

I admire the effort in coming back from a bad position but in the end it was for nought. I don't think Shaffer even has a pro ranking. Just don't think Sonya should be losing this.

Omg, she just lost a 2h30+ shitfest against qualifier Kennedy Shaffer in R2, 6-4 1-6 6-7(5)

This is pretty tragic, she needs to regroup!

I hope she doesn't change her nationality to US

Yes seems a bit. I don't know if there's been any sort of mention of her in Russian media. But in terms of social media it's been very quiet recently. It could be due to change of coaching situation. Or maybe her team are purposely trying to deflect some of the attention away from her.

Re: Sofya Zhuk

She plays today. Draw seems kind - got lucky loser Madeleine Kobelt - and if she wins that would play another qualifier.
