Re: Sofya Zhuk

It's always going to be a worry that there are too many off-court distractions for someone like Sofya. But she has been scheduling like this for a long time and shown she can reappear and win a tournament. I'm not going to read too much into a solitary loss, except I think she needs to work on how to make her serve less attackable.

Well, maybe to much Plein Glamour and to less practice these days, I wonder how this will turn out in the future...

Re: Sofya Zhuk

I was thinking she might make one of her epic comebacks. But no.

The numbers don't look pretty. As far as I remember after the first couple of service games she was 0 for 6 on 2nd serves won. And she was struggling to make any sort of impact on return.

Only good portion of the match was when Collins was serving for the set at *5-1. An atypical game in which Collins served her only DF of the first set and Sonya broke to love. She got through her own tricky service game to hold but from then on it was mostly one-way traffic.

So what to think about this performance? Worrying? A bad match-up?

$25k Rancho Santa Fe, CA (hard, outdoor)

[6] Daniela Seguel (CHI) v (SE) Caroline Dolehide (USA)
Danielle Rose Collins (USA) v Sofya Zhuk (RUS)
Qualifier v Qualifier
Kathinka von Deichmann (LIE) v [5] Sofia Kenin (USA)

Sonya is only ranked a few spots below Danielle. They've never played before. No idea how this'll go.

Sonya was at the Philipp Plein fashion show in New York last night. She was sat in the row behind Madonna and Kylie Jenner.
