Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Press clippings.

From Vavel:
First off, the biggest event of the week was won by Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele. The former world number 42 has struggled with injuries and consistency in recent years, forcing her to drop out of the top 100 for the first time since 2012. However, after losing in the second round of qualifying at the Australian Open, Voegele, seeded second, rebounded in impressive style, outclassing Belgium's An-Sophie Mestach in nearly every department to win the $50,000 event in Andrezieux-Boutheon, a commune of the Loire department in central France.

From 20 Minuten:

Solid win from Stefi. She has to be glad that she survived Amric and Golubic.

Yay! I'm so happy that I didn't get upset that the stream died before the presentation haha

I hope this kickstarts a great year ahead

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Yay! First title in 4 years!

Glad I stayed up, even if the stream was v laggy.
And now it's cut out just before the presentation. Sigh.

So happy for her. A piece of silverware at long last. On to Taiwan with confidence and momentum.

I think that's correct. Her last final was the Toyota ITF in 2012. She made the semi's of a few WTA events since (2013 Memphis, Charleston, Luxembourg, Linz, 2014 Baku, 2015 Luxembourg).

And now Stef is in a final, for the first time since 2012 if I'm not mistaken.

Entering this tournament was a good move for her, as she loses 70 points from last year's AO.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

She'll face hard hitting Dodin in the semi final. It would be nice to see Stefi be more aggressive. She went into the net a few times against Vika which was a good sign.

Re: Fed Cup non-selection
On the bright side she can focus on playing in Taiwan to earn points. Hopefully next year her form and confidence would improve to warrant selection.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

And she did it! (just)

Point proven.

Started well, like yesterday. Big wobble in the second set, third was a tight tussle with every service game hard-fought.

Dropped serve when serving for the match, but held her nerve after that.

I have to say, her fitness is not in doubt. I just wish she'd keep her foot on the throat and not let opponents back in like that. But at least she is tough enough to will herself to the win.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

A fascinating match in the offing today.

Stef was overlooked for Fed cup selection week after next, and this afternoon she plays the girl who is currently eating her lunch - Viktorija Golubic.

A pity that the team is already announced, when a virtual selection trial is happening under tournament conditions almost in their own backyard.

Stef will be looking to prove a point, no doubt, and Swiss-Vika will no doubt be looking to knock off the #2 seed.

Will Stef be not too stiff and sore after a 3-hour match less than 24 hours ago? We shall see. All in all, it's a fascinating tournament.

Match is second up on centre court, at 12:30pm CET.

Couldn't tell if it was nerves or she was just getting tired.

Certainly, both players looked all-in at the end, and were basically running on adrenaline.

I know it's only R2 of a challenger, but I'm proud of her. A win that showed some real character.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

And what an epic battle!

She won, 6-1 6-7 7-6.

Opponent picked her game up in the second set, and Stef got a little defensive. Had her chances in the tiebreaker, but when she lost it (14-12!), I thought the letdown might be enough to drop the last set.

And at 2-5 down, it looked like it.

But she dug deep, and this time no repeat of tiebreaker nerves, 7-3.

Match lasted over 3 hours, and it was gripping tennis.

Rest up for round 3 as best you can, Stef!
