I didn't even realise Hev had got in as a lucky loser until I checked Live Scores this morning before I went off the to the gym. She was tied at 4-4 in the 2nd set with Gavrilova and stepping up to serve. She immediately fell behind 0-40: three virtual match points. She saved the first, saved the second, and then, at 30-40 she DOUBLE-FAULTED to hand the game away. That's just criminal. Make your opponent earn the break FFS. Daria then held comfortably to 15 to finish the match.

Obviously, I missed Heather blowing her set-points in the opening set but it sounds much the same story as the end of set 2.

After recently winning her 3rd career title at Monterrey and enjoying a deep run at Miami I'd expect Heather to be playing with some confidence. But she's shown a total lack of mental strength in her losses to Kris Plis at Katowice and these back-to-back defeats at Madrid. It's very disappointing. The thigh problem that's been bothering her since Miami may not be helping but it's not a satisfactory explanation for why she's suddenly started choking again so badly. She had a miserable clay court season last year. I had high hopes she would compensate for that this season. Clay suits her game pretty well and it's not as if she has the pressure of defending any points at the moment. The only pressure is self-inflicted, though that's arguably the worst form of pressure of all because the tension can be crippling.

Heather should be doing better than this. Much, much better. I don't want to see her going into Roland Garros again with no wins under her belt.

nijoco First set 7-5 to Gav after set point at 4-5 for watson. From stats seems to be doing OK but needs to capitalise when she has advantage.

She's scheduled on the only court that isn't streamed.

Re: Heather's Cheering Thread

Hev is ok on clay. I think Lucic-Baroni is just so unpredictable. She has a big game and can blow people off court. So this loss isn't so bad. She has also been hampered by injury recently.

P.S I hope Hev gets a good draw at the French Open. She needs to get to the 4th round of a Grand Slam!

Re: Heather's Cheering Thread

I'm struggling to understand why Hev hasn't done better on red clay (easily her worst surface). Were those American green clay courts useless in her development?

nijoco To lose grip so badly and let not win even a set over lucic-baroni is painful to see. Heather should get some assistance from the clay but her mind isn't there- she was stronger all round when she was 20. What on earth is happening?

Apparently, it's the first time in her pro career that she's won a match in two tiebreaks.
