Re: Heather's Cheering Thread

Getting to the 3rd round would be a big step forward. Let's hope it happens. She gets better the more matches she plays.

Hev draws a qualifier in the first round at the US open. Second round would be Babos/qualifier. If she got to the third round, would most likely be playing Halep.

Getting to the second week of the US open should be a big priority.

There was a discussion about this on Britishtennis.net. "Indiana" pointed out something else: the majority of those losses have been straight sets. Heather may have lost several matches up to Rome but they were tough three setters. She stayed up till the early hours of the morning against Larsson in Hobart - her 2nd match of the day! - in an effort to hang on to her title. She battled the big-hitting Timea Babos to the end at Flinders Park.

Now she's disappearing under an hour of match play. This anecdote will tell you how low my confidence in her ability to win matches is right now: I checked my phone when I got on the train for the commute home from work on the day of her round 1 qualifying match against Sakkari in New Haven. She was already trailing *0-2 in the 1st set and was struggling in her 2nd service game too. This may sound absurd - or that I'm a clairvoyant - but I realised immediately that she was gonna lose the match. Rather than torture myself by following it on live score I put on some music instead. Smart decision. When I next checked WTA live scores the match was already over and had been shifted to the 'Completed' section. 1-6; 3-6. The only (mild) surprise was that the score was a bit more one-sided than I'd anticipated.

Do you have the 'Keep calm and Take a bath Photo' in mind? That was quite provocative as was the close-up of her, err, genital area in another pic. Hev has glammed up a lot over the last couple of years but she's taken it up a further notch lately: the eye-popping latex dress at the pre-Wimbledon party etc. I know she split up with her boyfriend a year or so ago, and perhaps she wants to express her sexuality to her Facebook admirers, but it's weird to see her going down the Vitalia Diatchenko route. I wouldn't have imagined it of her three years ago. When she had that slump in form in the aftermath of her illness she was so depressed she stopped posting on social media. At the end of the season, after she'd exited the top 100, she took a phone shot of her ranking as a reminder to herself to never sink so low again. Yet the possibility is arising of another slip from the top 100 and she doesn't give the impression it's even entered her head. Better to be happy than to be sunk in gloom, of course, but I haven't a clue what she wants from her tennis career now.

Are you talking about the recent picture with Lloyd Glasspool? do you think they could be a couple?

Yep, looks like it..

Diego Veronelli confirms he and Heather Watson are working together again - VAVEL.com

Not really sure how that is progressing though. For some reason, Hev has never been able to follow up a title win with more good results, she seems to drop down in performance straight afterwards, which is disappointing.

Mr.Sparkle OMG, she lost to the Greek ITF scrub

I am sure she is just saving herself for a deep run at the US open.

Well... she better win the first round at least. Might not be able to do anything agianst a peaking Lucic-Baroni/Shvedova/Giorgi/Barthel..although Mona is in poor form and I think she knows how to play Giorgi, so we will see.

Mr.Sparkle One of the main reasons Heather's singles ranking has not gone past the 30s is because of her poor performance at Grand Slams.

I bet she is going to draw Kuznetsova in the first round.

Skipping Cincinnati qualifying is not a good sign. She lost early in all three events at the Olympics so fatigue can't be a legitimate factor. Jo Konta went far deeper in singles and she hasn't withdrawn, though as a seed she has the luxury of direct entry and a bye to round 2. But it just illustrates that the gap between Jo and Heather keeps growing and growing and I'm not sure if Hev believes she can bridge it. Jo's knocking on the door of the top 10; Hev's at the wrong end of the top 70.

I suppose the biggest disappointment of Hev's Olympics - apart from throwing away her match against Svitolina - was her lacklustre display in the mixed doubles with Andy. Since Hev had won the mixed at Wimbledon with Kontinen and she'd played twice before with Andy in the Hopman Cup I was expecting big things from the partnership. But they barely looked up for it against the Indian pairing of Mirza and Bopanna. They played without any energy or fight - Murray was listless and Hev's level was very poor. And this was the Olympics which Hev's built her whole season around!

At the very least I hope Hev finally breaks her duck at the US Open. Is it 5 or 6 years of consecutive 1st round exits now? But I don't think there's such a thing as an easy draw for Hev, and nothing can be taken for granted.
