Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Update

Clift, Vera Kezia
Australia
Born in 1884 in Maitland, New South Wales
Died in 1975 in Killara, New South Wales

Married Basil Belgrave Capper in 1912

Active circa 1898-1905. Vera Clift is probably the Miss Clift who won the doubles title with Phoebe Howitt at the Victorian Championships in 1898, although Vera would only have been fourteen years old or so at the time. The same two players also won the doubles at the New South Wales Championships in 1899, when Vera reached the All-Comers' Final of the singles event before losing to Rose Payten. Vera Clift and Phoebe Howitt also retained the doubles at the Victorian Championships in 1899 and at the New South Wales Championships in 1900, the year in which Vera also reached the All-Comers' Final of the singles event at the Queensland Championships.

Vera Clift also took part in the Queensland Championships in 1903, when her first name was mentioned in the following report in 'The Brisbane Courier': http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/ar...sortby=dateAsc
--

Vera Clift was the eighth and last child of George Clift and Kezia Jane Clift (née Butler). Vera's family is listed here: https://www.geni.com/people/Vera-Cap...00017624109775

Vera Clift must have married Basil Capper in the last months of 1912 because she was still single when her father, George, died in June of that year and when the details of his Will were published three months later, in September. The wedding was probably a quiet affair out of respect for Mr Clift.

Hi Mark-you are correct. We are speaking of two different Mrs Wilkinson's

http://www.tennisforum.com/72937434-post299.html

Mrs RC Wilkinson (nee Nelson)=Florence Annie Nelson (born c 1880)

She married Reginald Court Wilkinson on 16 January 1912 in Paddington. His will of October 1958 does not mention his wife.

Her date of birth comes from the 1911 census. The place of birth was Timberley, Cheshire (also in Middlesex?) She is listed as living with the family of her future husband.

We are still in search of Mrs E.F. Wilkinson.

I will be updating all of these tomorrow.
