Re: Shahar Peer's low point this week...

its a pity we dont have a case study set of w/ue count, df, break convertion etc, especially broken by wings.

her fh always tended to crumble under pressure, especially since it was weaker on the run, moonballing back (which is why higher players did better).

her bh swing was erratic, played from way too high and used an awkwardly timed change of weight.

her on court attitude was always lousy but her fitness and fight often allowed a comeback, most notably against russian headcases.

But she used to be very consistent and so ambitious.

When I see her playing like that I can't believe that she's seriously trying. Maybe she just gives 50-70 % and that's just not enough..

Well, this can't be fun for her

Re: Shahar Peer's low point this week...

She's obviously not out of the top 200, but she deserves to be considering how bad her results in the last year were.
Her game was built on intensity - intense running, intense grinding and intense fighting. In 2008 she lost the grinding and still had the running and the fighting. In 2010 she got the grinding back and added a few more things to her game (with Pablo). In 2011 her ranking got to her head and she totally lost it - didn't have the running nor the grinding, only the fight. In 2012 she kept fighting and tried her best with here new coach Solomon which didn't work out too well, he took her game to the wrong places. This year, not only did she lose her fight, but she also lost her passion to win.

Shahar never had the best technique (to say the least) but always had her passion and intensity, both drove her forward and got her great success on tour. The fact is that even when some players lose their intensity they have their games to rely on (like Azarenka's case before the AO win last year), Shahar doesn't have that. When you have nothing to play tennis with, you just cannot win.

The next few weeks will be absolutely crucial for Shahar - is she going back up again or is she hanging the racquet?

Re: Shahar Peer's low point this week...

Her career has had way too many ups and downs if you consider how fairly one-dimensional her game has always been.

Broke through in early 2006 playing an aggressive, bruising baseline grinding game which, though one-dimensional, was quite unlike anything we had seen before (and quite impressive from such a physically unassuming player).

Was among the new crop of #10-25 range players that made the Tour very competitive back by mid 2007.

But by early 2008, her FH had gone down the shitter and the rest of her game went with it. Slump went on for 2 years or so.

Bounced back in 2010 with a more versatile game that included some use of touch shots (!) and a willingness to come to the net (!). Had many good wins, 2 MM titles, and played an epic match vs Venus at the USO, even though her lack of weapons meant that she continued to suffer brutal losses at the hands of players who combined both mobility and firepower. Was one match win away from the top 10 in the spring of 2011, got beaten by Julinha, and never quite seemed to recover from that setback. Has been pretty much irrelevant ever since.

Anyway, if some of the nasty gossip coming out of the spats between members of the Israeli Fed Cup squad is true, Peer's commitment to the game right now is at least questionable.

Reading TF cyberbullying was the main reason probably.

I'd say Dokic and Vaidisova's falls were more extreme given that Jelena is a former world number 4 and Vaidisova reached multiple slam semis.

Both were still playing a pretty full schedule when they slid down the rankings.
