Govortsova wins in Indian Harbour Beach

With her nation set to compete on its biggest stage yet in this weekend’s Fed Cup by BNP Paribas semifinals, Olga Govortsova enjoyed the perfect warm-up for Belarus’ crunch clash with Switzerland on 22-23 April by winning her biggest title since 2012 on the ITF Pro Circuit in Indian Harbour Beach.

In a strong field that included the likes of 2014 Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard and former world No. 35 Madison Brengle, Govortsova came through three tough three-setters, including against Amanda Anisimova in the final, to win her seventh career title on the Pro Circuit on Sunday.

In just her fourth tournament appearance this year, Govortsova defeated 15-year-old Anisimova 63 46 63 in the final at the Kiwi Tennis Club – a decade after finishing runner-up to Bethanie Mattek-Sands at the same event.

“I lost in the finals of this tournament in 2007,” said Govortsova. “Winning is so much better.”

Govortsova’s triumph at the $80k ITF Women’s Circuit event is the second biggest title of her career – after the triumph at the $100k Midland event in 2012. Her victory in the final was also her 100th career match-win on the ITF Pro Circuit.

The 27-year-old Belarusian will be buoyed by her recent form when she lines-up alongside teammates Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Aryna Sabalenka and Vera Lapko in Minsk on 22-23 April, as the hosts take on Switzerland for the right to feature in November’s Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final.

Congratulations to princess Olga on the title! Amanda is a dangerous up and coming youngster and Olga did well to fend her off, as well as taking down several solid players on the way.
