Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

Well the difference was very big today and I guess both pretty much realized this early on, after the first three games that were close. You could see how stress-free Monica was after that, played those dropshots and lobs so relaxed like in a training session. Too bad for Ana, on a better day she should win more games or even a set like in Bucharest.

However that MTO and the grimaces Monica was making at the beginning frightened me a little, even if it looked like the shoulder was the issue this time and not the back Seems lately Monica has a match where she feels great on court, then the next day she can barely move because of her back, even has to retire like at the Olympics. We'll see how dubs go and how fit she is in the next round... but Woz is definitely not the kind of player you want to play when not at 100%

accident prone. As long as the accidents are limited to ice towels and avoid her, am all for it. Aneta never stood a chance today, but she'll be back. Moni is ON and that makes me very happy. Plus, it's lovely to watch

def. Ana Bogdan 6-0 6-1 .

R3 vs. Wozniacki who beat Kuznetsova out of nowhere . H2H vs. Woz is very very bad but they didn't meet since 2013 and the Dane is in a slump this year. Maybe she goes back to it after this Top 10 win .

Doubles later for Monica. (also streamed ) . Very humid. Players having problems, as well as Monica who had a medical time-out. Thankfully, the doubles opponents are some poor ranked Wildcards.

And the usual Gif

Agreed with all of the above. It was very clear she made a concentrated effort to keep her cool during this match -and it really worked. Of course she's going to have the occasional outburst, but this was much more contained than what I've seen in the past. Definitely a very good sign. I think one of the reasons why Strycova was cramping so badly at the end was all the energy she wasted in the early stages of the match, being frustrated and jumping around after every slice that forced her to miss a shot into the net.

That headbang was kinda bad indeed but in general she was very positive in this match compared to others. I had started to deeply dislike those theatrical dives she does sometimes after an error...

This!
I also saw that and took it right away as a great sign for this match

Also [stating the obvious here] Ana is clearly much better than she was last year. Monica has to be favorite but Ana has as good of chance as ever here.

Arguably the best match Monica played this year on the tour Idk there was just something about her demeanor, she seemed very "professional"... her attitude was great, pretty calm and focused, almost no problem on serve expect that one game, backhand was on fire, great length, every shot seemed to land in for her... and most importantly no sign of her injury

They actually played a pretty long 3-setter in Bucharest last year, so this isn't a foregone conclusion. It's just nice to have Moni back and doing well in singles . Had to leave midway through the second set, so I need to catch up on the rest of the match now. Strycova was obviously frustrated by Monica's slice -and losing her mind (more than usual) as a result

Great win today against (18)Strycova : 6-3 6-7 6-1

Almost won in straights, but got broken serving for the match at 5-4 in the 2nd. But nevermind now. All good when ends good.

Given my mini-crush on Ana, I'm not gonna wish Moni good luck in the next round... but she prolly won't need it anyway. There's still a notable difference between them... and if any of them is to have a shot at R4 (or more), Moni is anyway the better equipped to face Kuzzy IMO.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

Really impressive imo that she made this ranking with all the different partners she had in the last year: Begu, Gasparyan, Halep, King, Mirza, Wickmayer (+Mitu). All the others in front of her in the top15 are established pairs

USO dubs draw is out. Nice bye in R1 but they got Makarova/Vesnina

US Open
Doubles Draw

Stosur/Zhang v Jankovic/Knoll
Kichenok/Kichenok v (wc)Crawford/Pegula

Third title of the year for Monica, all with different partners... and although it looked NID from the start, this is in theory Monica's biggest title of her career so far Good luck in NYC now

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

They made the final in New Haven and will play against Bondarenko/Chuang for the title. Actually it's not the first time they play together, also played in 2010 and made the QF in Cincy

USO draw is also out... pretty bad one for Monica, she got that doper again

US Open
Main Draw

(18)Strycova v Niculescu
Cirstea v Bogdan
Townsend v Wozniacki
Schiavone v (9)Kuznetsova

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

I don't like this gap either. I don't want her turned into a Doubles specialist (too soon).

Great partner, but IDK how much Mirza will care. She's currently in Cincy Final (to be played tomorrow) , battling with the recently "divorced" teammate Hingis for #1 .
