Re: Mona Barthel News & Opinion

Mk yesterday posted an article of a Northern German newspaper in one of the German threads. It obviously was writen last week.

Neumünster ? Der Leidensweg der Mona Barthel / Sport im Norden / Sport - LN - Lübecker Nachrichten

Tbh imo not the very best style but here it is -

Quote:
Der Leidensweg von Mona Barthel

The life of suffering of Mona Barthel

Quote:
While the German Fed-Cup women`s team will be trying to stay in the World group next week-end against Romania Mona Barthel will keep her fingers crossed at home in Neumünster and watch the live stream. For once again she would have liked to be a part of the team but since the beginning of the year she`s ill.

Quote:
Already in Decembre she had diffuse feelings of dizziness but her blood values were fine. "I didn`t take it serious", Barthel tells.
At the tournament at Hobart she complaint about problems with her back. At the AO she additionally had a gastroentitis and went out in the first round against Vania King. " I felt pretty weak there, " Barthel says. It was her ast match until today.

Quote:
What happened afterwards, " was a very, very difficult time for me". Barthel describes the weeks after she came back from Australia. " I always felt dizzy, I could hardly walk 10 meters nonstop, probably 300 meters in one day. Normal walking was not possible for me".

Quote:
Barthel consulted a lot of different medecins in Northern Germany, even at the tropical institute at Hamburg, checking her out from head to toe and had 3 MRIs and one CT. Just at the right time she was able to skip a surgery date.
"Everywhere they noticed irregular (blood) values", she says. "But nobody coud tell me what my disease actually is. Often these diagnosis seemed pretty random to me".
And with a smile in her face she now tells : "I was the best examined person in the World".

Quote:
Seven weeks she was lying in her bed, at least without having fever.
"In the end it must have been a viral illness, an inflammtion of muscles. There was a kind of ponderousness in my body. Even putting beside the bed spread was not easy to me. It was extremely hard".

Quote:
For once at that time she was trying to take a tennis raquet in her hands. After 10 minutes it was over and she had to stop.

Quote:
Now it`s slowly going upwards. It`s getting better from day to day."I`m already quite happy to be able to go shopping again without trouble and for doing 10 minutes a bit of aerobics every day".

Quote:
Right now she`s still far away from thinking at a normal practice in tennis. 2 days ago she was very carefully hitting a few balls with her Mum. "I don`t know when I can come back to the tour again. I won`t set a point in time for it to me".
Quote:
But secretly she`s hoping to be able to play the French Open and at Wimbledon."That would be nice", Barthel tells who has gone down in the rankings a bit (68). "Now I feel a thousand times better than in the weeks before. I`m trying to improve slowly in practice." She has never lost her spirit and hope during that time.

Quote:
Barthel is a fighter and wishes that her Fed-Cup colleagues will also fight against Romania on the week-end.

She is already very good, but she needs to understand her ideal game, and then how to work to develop that. At this stage she seems very confused about how she ought to play the game, and unless she resolves that she will remain at this level, which is very high, honestly she's world class considering she can play all the slams and is ranked in the top 50, but she's not quite truly elite level and I don't feel she has fully harnessed her potential yet. She needs a clear picture of what she needs to become, and then she can develop a clear plan of how to get there.

If she was to reach the top 20 this year for the first time, I think that would be an excellent year. She was ranked 23 once before and I don't think it's beyond her at all if she gets things right.

Anyway, hope everyone's had/having a wonderful Christmas holiday.
+1 + Mona needs to stay healthier than last year.
Then I`m quite confident that her efforts will pay out.

I wish you all a merry Christmas🎄🎅🎁. It is my first Christmas at home since 5 years and I am enjoying it before heading to Australia. Every day I am feeling a bit better and I hope I can recover fully before my first tournament.
OMG, that means she is still sick.

There seems to be something wrong with Mona’s immune system. It doesn’t take that long normally to recover from a gastro-intestinal disease, and in general you don’t get sick that often, even as a competitive sportswoman.

I am starting to lower my expectations for the Australian season.

Anyway, get well soon and have a Merry Christmas, Mona!

@kiriosh.

I don’t expect a major improvement, to be honest. It simply won’t happen as long as she doesn’t get aware of her true potential and fully commit to it.

Ranking-wise she’ll probably move up a few places, because this year her off-season preparation has not been disrupted by a major injury. But as I mentioned, I don’t see a general change in her development.
