Re: Julia from Paris to Miami 2013

Yeah, I think they actually played well in the doubles, and while Julia obviously is focused on her singles career at this point, I'm glad she's one of my few faves to play doubles. She may not be the best player on the doubles court, yet, but I think it's making her a better overall player, increases the variety in her game, gives her more options in her singles matches. Her volleys, for instance, are definitely improving as she gets more experience and more confidence at the net.

Good doubles tournament

Re: Julia from Paris to Miami 2013

To be honest, I'm a little afraid that if she were more successful in doubles she would focus on them even more and pay even less attention to what really matters. So her doubles results are always a little ambiguous for me.

Let's hope she'll have enough time in South Carolina to get used to green clay. No Petrova in Charleston, that's the good news.

Jule and Slava just lost doubles, 4-6 6-7. On to Charleston....

They lost 4-6 (3)6-7. Quite a good match against the #2 team in the race. Now on to Charleston. She needs to start winning matches in singles.

Doubles tomorrow 10:45 on Stadium. Playing Petrova/Srebotnik.

Edit: Won't be shown anyway. Why should they? It's just women playing.

Re: Julia from Paris to Miami 2013

Sort of odd she would play one HarTru event before heading over to Europe. It's sort of an intermediate in terms of surface, like a "fast" clay or a "slow" hardcourt with some claycourt characteristics. Not really like the RG surface at all. I like it, wish there were more tournaments on it, but it just seems weird that with only one HarTru event on the schedule now the players would even think about playing it. Money, I guess.

Re: Julia from Paris to Miami 2013

Her doubles match isn't scheduled for today. So much time wasted in Miami that would be of better use preparing on clay. Given the "5 or 6 days" she says she needs to get used to a new surface Charleston is going to be the next disappointment.

Re: Julia from Paris to Miami 2013

It didn't look at all like she had a back injury, but you never know how hard she might or might not be pushing it in doubles. Her movement looked fine, she never reached for her back or held it or anything like that and never got any treatment during the match, so hopefully it was a minor issue that she's recovered from already.

Thanks for the report again. So it didn't look like her back was bothering her too much?

Re: Julia from Paris to Miami 2013

Saw the doubles today vs. Hantuchova/Medina Garrigues. Julia and Yaroslava started a little slowly again, down 1-3, in the first set, but rallied. Julia was a little inconsistent at times (so was Yaroslava, especially on her serve games), but hit some big forehand winners at key moments. I think Julia also served better. The team won the first set 7-5 after rallying to break for 5-all, hold and break for the set. They held and broke for 2-0, burped up a game at 2-1, then got a comfortable lead at 4-1 which held up for a 7-5 6-2 win as Julia hit some nice forehands to help close it out. There was a nice crowd on court 2, lots of Germans there for Julia. I was able to take a bunch more photos and another 23 minutes of video from this match.

Also, I know some photos from the singles were already posted in the picture thread, but I have a lot more from her singles and 1st round doubles that haven't made it to my Flickr yet, so stay tuned. The hotel wifi is really slow, so most of my photos will be uploaded when I get home.

Re: Julia from Paris to Miami 2013

Petrova/Srebotnik next most likely, and with that probably the third tournament in a row where Petrova kicks Julia out of the competition.

They won against Hantuchva and Medina 75 62
