Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

From the tournament site:

In the toughest match of the day lasting over 2 hours and 38 minutes 103 ranked Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland played a ding dong match to survive against local qualifier Sabina Sharipova 7/5 5/7 7/5.
Voegele won the first set breaking Sharipova in the 11th game of the first set , in the second set Sharipova came from being 2-5 down and saving 3 match points to break Voegele in the 12 game and level set scores.
In the third set Sharipova rallied fluently from the baseline hitting a series of winners to go up 4-2 in the third set , Voegele held on to make it 4-3 at the change Voegle called for a medical break which seemed to disturb the 22 year old Uzbek rhythm as she lost two games in row to let the Swiss go up 5-4. Voegele lost her serve in the 10th game and he scores were level at 5-5 .
Sharipova looked jaded in the final two games and lost her serve in the 11th game while Voegele held on her 12th game with two aces and emerge winner in the battle of nerves and move into the round of 16 for the second year in a row.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Oh. Talk about doing it the hard way.

I think I've aged 10 years just watching that.

Some awful play, with Steffi having two opponents, one on the other side of the net, the other inside her head. Her self belief evaporated after she couldn't close out the first set, but she kept fighting.

Now and again, on the other hand, we saw glimpses of Steffi at her best.

She went for more on her first serve - that crunching ace to go up 5-1 in the second set was a beauty, she was hitting deeper, returning to centre quickly (she's been watching Jo Larsson for that at a guess!) and best of all, was prepared to go for the smash at the net.

Was out-rallied and pushed off the baseline at times today, and as usual, it was her lack of anticipation that let her down most.

But a win's a win, and credit to her for fighting it out and pushing through.

Believe it or not, someone said Uzbek is one of the rare places in Asia where people are not very degenerated by overpopulation unlike my god-damn-it zombieland.
She didn't fly to Tashkent the night she lost and stayed a few days to train in the facilities. She should shrug off the disappointing loss and the dismal party she had last week and losing to Sharipova won't be acceptable even in her current shape.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

And the qualifier has been identified:

Not the Mildronator, but an Uzbek local girl.

Decent player, too.

I must say, Tashkent is the ultimate exotic location in my mind. A land of fable and legend. Tamerlane and stuff.

Worked with a lady from Uzbekistan about 20 years ago. A glamorous Russian.
