Go back and look at all the #12345 she did beat at slams!

I think we all know the rankings can be misleading. We all know the Kuzzy that Vika played in the QF is better than the Caroline Wozniacki she would have faced. Same goes for Li Na. She was a tougher challenge than Aga or Maria would have been.
Again, all I stated was facts.

But I trust, given this viewpoint you've just explained, that I'll never see you criticising Maria's "cakewalk" draw at RG last year.

The flaw to this question is none of the top 5 faced another top 5 player. In fact Vika beat the players that beat 3 of the other 4 in the top 5. So what could she do if they couldn't beat the players to reach her? I suppose she was supposed to let Li win just so Li could boast a tough run having beaten 3 of the top 4 yer?

GOOd, now people won't talk about Maria that much.

Re: When was the last time a player won a slam without facing a TOP 5 player?

I really hate when people bring up these threads, let me explain why i) seedings do not determine the quality of a player it ranges day to day (Hampton before the ugly back injury and Kuznetsova in the first set of the QF) ii) it is not her fault that things have occured, it is not LUCK it is occurrence, it is not her fault that seeded players are unable to win or injure themselves, these things OCCUR.

As posters have said above, Serena did well to win AO with players like Henin and Azarenka but they weren't top five? Rankings mean nothing.

Agreed. I'm not a fan by any stretch of the imagination, but you can only play who you are pitted against and it says more about her victory that the other top players couldn't persevere.

Serena at 2010 Wimbledon was the most recent I could remember. But her form was so amazing that she would have pummelled anyone in her way, Top 5 or non Top 5 anyway.

Doesnt matter who Vika beat, she still earned the slam rightfully. Easy draws happen here and there, one can never control which opponents they face.

Re: When was the last time a player won a slam without facing a TOP 5 player?

Last year she had to knock out Clijsters, Radwanska, and Sharpaova. This year, she had an easier road.

That's how the cookie crumbles. Some years the road is tougher. Not her fault.

Plus, for all the times she's had to play Serena painfully early in slams... she deserved a bit of a break.
