I was the most excited about this match up today considering all that Laura has accomplished, but she came out so flat today. Facey was being supported by what looked to be her mom and her sister. You could tell that Facey is more comfortable in doubles as she came up to the net a lot. She had a two hand backhand slice that threw off Laura right from the start. Once Laura figured out Facey's game it was smooth sailing but not comfortably by any means. Facey had some opportunities to really push for that first set. I can see Laura qualifying, but she needs to get it together if she wants to be competitive with the top players again. She was back on court with her coach a couple hours later doing some serious on-court drills. She was practicing a lot better so maybe she is not comfortable in match play.

(wc)Kat Facey (USA) d. (alt)Brianna Morgan (USA) 62 63
Nice to see UF player Brianna get in as the third on site alternate, but I have no idea how she lost this match. I had already left when they went on court but I am intrigued to see if Kat can throw off Laura. She was watching that match very intently. If Laura plays tentatively she could pull off the upset but I can barely see that happening.
From the Lexington Thread. Thanks @Kevin. Hope you don't mind me quoting you here. Very interesting match summary.

That would be very, very sad and the loss of a huge talent. Let's hope that Laura can sort things out over the next few months.

I agree with Mr sparkle that Laura needs some different coaching - and perhaps someone to help with the mental side of her game (how about the sports psychologist that has so helped Jo?). She should be winning these matches with one hand behind her back and yet she constantly struggles. She needs to try something different.

I think there is a lot of mental scarring still with her wrist and that's having an effect on her serve.
TBH, I thought the new wrist would have a more dramatic effect on her forehand, possibly to the point that she would never be able to hit forehands like she used to again. Although Laura hasn't had the best results, her forehand is still very much there.

In regards to the serve though, it's understandable that she wouldn't want to put a lot of topspin on her serve. I think she either needs to adopt the Sharapova approach of hitting two first serves or try hitting a slice for the second serve (which isn't the best as it's quite low percentage, but might work ok in terms of winning points off second serve, because she has that lefty spin).

I agree about the mental scarring. That's why I think she needs so much more support than she is getting now, from a coach who knows what he's talking about and some kind of mental coach or sports psychologist.

Lack of confidence in her abilities more so than anything. She's been her own worst enemy since her comeback. The more she wins these gruelling matches the better. But she needs to be playing week in, week out and winning matches to really get the confidence back.

This is her first two match win streak since Sunrise in January. Let's hope she can go one better and win a third match and qualify.

This match should never have gone three. I with you - what was going on in the second set? And then the awful tiebreak. At least she got it done eventually.

Feel like she's really making life difficult for herself.

Re: Return Winner: The Laura Robson support thread.

I think this is the only way I can describe how I felt following those live scores...

First set went as it should, with Laura winning 6-0...

Second set, Laura was steadily leading...but then WTF??? Was leading 5-4 but couldn't hold, was leading 6-5 but couldn't hold..ended up down 6-0 in the tiebreak, won a point and then lost it.

The third set was also a big struggle. She came through 6-4 in the end but my God, what the hell happened?

Interestingly the no of DFs between sets 1 (7) to Sets 2 and 3 (9 and 5) aren't that different... The big difference between the first and second set seemed to be the number of points she won behind her first serve, 74% in the first set and 48% in the second set. Went back up to 63% in the third set....

Maybe she got really nervous about DFing away the match in the second set, and so ended up tapping in her first serve and double faulting anyway??

Laura really needs a new coach, someone who can really work on her serve with her. She has the ability to serve well. If it is just the ball toss that is probably one of the easiest things to work on...surely... I also think it's quite unusual for lefties to struggle with the ball toss, as they are more comfortable using their right hand, than righties are at using their left hand...

Re: Return Winner: The Laura Robson support thread.

Kat is the better singles player than her sister, but still expect Laura to win in 2 easy sets.. actually she shouldn't be even close anywhere to losing tomorrow.

I dare say the last time Laura faced twins in successive rounds it was the Pliskies in the SF and F of the AO juniors. I don't think Kat will do what Karo did.
Yes, that is correct.

Also Priscilla went out today. She has a good chance to qualify..i.e if there's any hope she really should qualify...
