Just the combination of these 2 facts , makes me less worried about the match. I feel like as long as Laura serve well and return enough serves, she will win. Can't wait
This is true.. One thing is, that Laura puts a decent amount of spin on the ball and so can hit high to Naomi's backhand. Naomi puts barely any topspin on the ball.. so what Laura really needs to worry about are the flat shots with a lot of pace, and the slices Naomi starts hitting when Laura attacks. Otherwise, Laura will get a lot of balls sitting up in her strike zone to take advantage of.

I think the crucial thing will be Laura's serve. If she can serve just fairly decently, Naomi will struggle. If Laura makes it too easy for Naomi to break serve, and Naomi is serving bombs, it could be over for Laura quite quickly..

From Laura's point of view, I agree that Broady was one of the better players to draw. She's had a rough road recently, struggling to win more than a match at a time on the WTA tour, and naturally Broady just isn't going to be as confident and match-ready as Robson is currently.

Better that than drawing Radwanska, who's probably a step too far at them moment, or another player who has been successful in challengers this summer.

I'm not sure. Naomi doesn't play Fed Cup, they've never played doubles together (I don't think?), and when Robson was playing on the tour before her injury Broady was mainly playing ITF's, and vice verse since her return. It's possible that they just don't really know each other.

Laura is never controversial though, so it's hard to see it being a bitchfest.
They are both pretty friendly with Heather. They were pictured together a couple of months ago for Falconi's birthday party. Also, in an interview(can't remember when), Naomi was quite complimentary towards Laura, and hoping she could get back to match fitness. I think it's correct they are on good terms but just don't know each other very well.

I do like Naomi but I agree, she moans way too much in matches sometimes. I am hoping their match is relatively drama free. I am not sure if they are actually friends or not?

OFC there might be a big difference in quality between those she has beaten and those that have beaten her. I wouldn't imagine playing a leftie would bother her too much though, as she actually prefers to hit off the backhand side.

One time perhaps but 2 or 3 times for her to lose a game/match no

Would be so funny if Laura had a few ball toss encounters, just to annoy her. No doubt she'll be screaming at the umpire to get Laura disqualified.

Well the 20 second rule applies in Flushing so it can't be a repeat of Landisville or she'll get penalised. I'm hoping now she's a bit more confident she's not overthinking the ball toss too much and just getting on with it.

I saw a clip during her first qualifying match and she was still having problems with it. But her serving seems to have improved by each match, in terms of the stats, so hopefully it is the same for her ball toss.

I can imagine Naomi will definitely kick up a fuss if Laura is tossing the ball up too much though.

Re: Return Winner: The Laura Robson support thread.

Laura v Naomi. Could it be decided by who gets most serves in or who gets most serves back?

Apart from the whizz bang serve there should be some very short rallies. Laura has never been comfortable playing the ball from round her knees or below, but long tall Naomi can't play anything consistently from below her hips. Anything that sits up is likely to be pulverised from either end but the first one to get a low slice in should be in charge. Laura doesn't need to go for the lines - from the rare matches on TV with Naomi, she also struggles with the ball played straight at her. With her long arms & legs it It takes her too long to get herself far enough away from the ball to then get the room to swing & the weight transfer back into the shot. Naomi often gets cramped playing her single handed backhand so close to her body it could be played double handed.

Laura's recipe should be simple - get the serve back and play a minimum of 4 shots per rally - Naomi doesn't do long baseline exchanges so the outcome could be decided not so much by who wins the most points but by the one who loses fewest (edit. not least.)
