I don't think so wow Hev only hit one more unforced error (35 to Gibbs 34) yet with a difference of 32 winners! Looks like Hev's aggressive game is really coming along...

Gibbs didn't seem to handle the delay yesterday and took a while to get back into the swing of things.

Good win and it will be a great experience playing my fav Sveta in round 2!
She actually played better than yesterday. In one game she hit four winners in a row. Her net game was also working very well which I think makes a big difference to Hev.

I swear Hev always gets tough second or third rounds in Grand Slams... Anyway hopefully she can give Sveta a good match.

Doubles will be interesting. I'm presuming the partnership is down to them both being sponsored by New Balance.
Every time I watch Giggs her attitude sucks. She was awful yesterday.

Heather has all but guaranteed her Olympic place now. That is great as she really didn't look like she was gonna do it a few months ago. I still don't get how she can play so well then so badly for long periods.

Yes Heather!!!

She played the first set back, exactly right, keeping up the pressure but also keeping the margin for error wide. Then midway through she just found her game. Played very aggressive with a lot of winners and some fantastic volleys and overheads to finish off the rallies. The overhead she hit to close out the match was great!

Gibbs looked pissed and threw her racket to the ground. The handshake wasn't that great either..doubles is going to be awkward...

But on the plus side, Hev is going to Rio!!!

What a change from yesterday. After repeated pathetically weak volleys & overheads yesterday, Heather demolished Gibbs with a string of overhead smashes that would do credit to a badminton player.

Mr.Sparkle Come on Troicki!

Mr.Sparkle Looks like Hev will be back on court 3 after Troicki and Dimitrov. That match is going to be tight, could well go to five sets.

What a point to finish on yesterday though. Whoever wins the next point could sway the outcome of the whole match... So nervous for Hev...

She won't be saying that when they play doubles together!
I didn't see that... Maybe it was just said in the heat of the moment on court. Gibbs certainly brings a lot of intensity and emotion out on court. I can't see them doing very well in doubles anyway, and this will probably just make it worse.

I am HOPING the very long rain delay will give Heather time to realise this. She has the superior game, and she can win as long as she just stays calm. Of course, Gibbs will not just hand her the match, she will fight til the bitter end.

Possibly... there was a lengthy stare from "Gibsyyyy" at Heather after that point. Heather had been on such a roll since they'd returned to court after the rain break. She was jerking Gibbs all over the court with her droppers, first-strike groundshots and drive volleys. Gibbs looked at a loss to deal with her versatility of shot. But that opening game of the 3rd set was an interesting one. Hev was clearly conscious of the need to keep the momentum up with the memory of the debacle against Bondarenko in Strasbourg fresh in her mind (where she'd scored a bagel in the 2nd set but then fell away so badly she conceded the 3rd 1-6). The 30-30 all point was huge. Hev came in behind a strong approach but Gibbs read it and hit a crushing forehand cross-court. Hev's reflex volley was quite astonishing and she let out an almighty yell! I don't think Gibbs was amused because she stared down Heather long and hard. I didn't catch the expletive but you might well be right. Hev then closed out the game with a strong serve and let out another war cry.

I really thought she was "on her way" at that point and so did she - that was about the 4th or 5th game she'd won on the trot - and I was slightly amazed when I then took a 5 minute break from the TV to come back and find Hev a break behind at 1-2*. And that's where play ended for the day.

They didn't seem like the best of friends, that's for sure. There's a definite air of tension in this match. Very different from when Babos meets Mladenovic on the singles court.

I'm hoping for another fast start from Heather a la set 2 tomorrow. She clearly has the superior skill set but whenever the nerves kick in or the concentration wavers she's in trouble. Gibbs is feeding on those moments of frailty. This match is so hard to call...

Re: Heather's Cheering Thread

Hope she can turn this one around. I'm fed up of seeing her lose to lower ranked players. Sam Smith gave an astonishing stat out earlier that in her last 50 tournaments, the average rank of Heather's first round opponent is no.89 !!! With that kind of good fortune in the draws, she should be winning more matches than she loses, but sadly it just doesn't happen. Nicole is no mug as Indian Wells proved, but Heather SHOULD win this.
