Her backhand down the line is actually pretty good. She hardly ever uses it for some reason though.

Her backhand slice...exists.. It's fine for defence but she could probably improve it's effectiveness.

When she's feeling confident and good about her game, her point construction is actually pretty smart.

But the rest need work. And also her second serve.

Yokohama no ball.kids
Very slow.court
Tons of Japanese players who relies on consistency putting balls in play and moves well.

This is tough.

Laura should just follow.what Jo.is doing.
Laura has more power too , its just the movement and consistency.

Re: Return Winner: The Laura Robson support thread.

I agree, Laura could not successfully play the way that Bellis does, that's just not what compliments her attributes. She does need to be more considerate of point construction though. She has even said her self in the past that you can't try and hit a winner off every shot, you have to wait for the right shot.

I think a better player to compare Laura to would be Kayla Day. She plays a similar game style to Laura, big hitting leftie, but she seems to have got the consistency thing down.. Of course, it's still early days with her, but I think she could very well be one of the top female American players soon and could later on be overtaking Bellis.

Re: Return Winner: The Laura Robson support thread.

But Laura would always be a "hit winners" player. Yeah there should have been more of a focus on fitness, but Laura doing well would always and will always depend on an ability to hit stunning winners.

Not all players are comparable. You can't look at Kvitova's inconsistency and say oh if only she'd been trained to play like Radwanska. There are fundamental differences in their builds, in their mentalities etc. And ultimately who has the better career in this example; the consistent player with great movement or the one prone to patches of utter dreadfulness with marginal footwork much of the time.

Laura was on course to be at the top of the game before her wrist injuries; the hit winners game is what she was made for. Lest we forget she took Agnieszka out with that very style in Madrid 2013.

Now that she's less able to rely on making the big winners (whether it's all confidence or wrist complications) she should certainly try and focus on construction a little more though, I agree.

Re: Return Winner: The Laura Robson support thread.

Watching young Bellis against Radwanska and although she may not go on to win, at 5-3 she is playing some lovely tennis and it makes me wonder who was responsible for Laura's coaching after her Wimbledon Junior title. Bellis is a mere slip of a girl, not yet 18 and already ranked 70, but every shot she moves well, has feet in the correct position and a lovely smooth backswing and follow through that is giving Radwanska real problems.

She has nothing like the power Laura put into her shots at that age but who needs power when you can play tennis like this? If Laura's early coaching had concentrated more on tennis shots and less on making the most of the 'hit winners' strategy, even allowing for the injury, Laura would have been in a much better place. Basically, if you asked how does Laura get to where she wants to be, the answer would probably be, you don't start from here.

Maybe Catherine Bellis is going to turn out to be a teenage phenomenon and I am judging Laura's early days against the wrong standard, but it looks to me as if Laura may pay for some poor leadership during her junior years.

Looks like she chose Yokohama, although it looks like she might have just scrapped into Zhuhai if she had waited just a little longer. I hope it pays off.

I don't follow ITF entry lists as avidly as I used to, but as I recall, except in very special cases(*), which this isn't, the acceptance list will look significantly different after the withdrawal deadline. However, I'm not expecting Laura to take the risk of withdrawing from Yokohama, in which case, if she hasn't herself withdrawn already, she'll be automatically withdrawn from Zhuhai on Tuesday.

(*) I'm thinking of events like Southsea coming up this summer.

thanks, I just watched the clip. well, if it was her she was leaving the railway bit (I think) at 12.20 and going into the tube. her hair at the back had quite noticeable blond highlights tho which the clip doesn't suggest however I notice she had them at the Fed Cup.

She could be.. The backdrop to her valentines photo looked like either London or Paris but not quite sure. I wonder why she'd be in Vauxhall though..
