I don´t think Kerber underestimated Monica either. Maybe some of her fans thought it was in the bag, but certainly not me. Those courts in Rio were perfect for Monica. Now Angie gets to #1 in New York and everything is perfect.

I am sorry about my sarcasm. What I meant was that Kerber seemed to me to be impressed by the way Monica was playing back in Brisbane 2013, which I thought was a compliment. But then again, I have a hard time understanding women's tennis.

Patrick has been a Monica fan all this time too. You can see that in the GM section.

I am cool with Kerber getting to number 1 in NY. Kerber doesn't need to win the tournament in order to get to #1

Re: OLYMPIC CHAMPION Monica Puig

On Monica Puig:

Garbine Muguruza: "It's an incredible achievement. When I played against her, I'd never seen her play at such a high level. When I ended the match, I thought it was tough for me, but she played very well and deserved to win the gold, the way she played."

Simona Halep: "I watched everything. In gymnastics, Simone [Biles] is whoah, incredible. I also watched Phelps. I know everything now. I watched the tennis final and Monica Puig played so well; she was there to win. I saw what she was saying on Twitter - I'm more into Twitter lately - how she was very motivated and confident. It was only shocking because of the ranking, but she plays well."

Re: OLYMPIC CHAMPION Monica Puig

I wake up every day and I can't believe it. She did it!! I knew she had the potential since she started playing professionally but I've always wondered when will she break through? I thought she would have a career maybe like Lucie Safarova or Li Na who found success late in her career because mentally it took her time to develop. But she proved me wrong and at 22 years old she has accomplished something so big that many tennis players who have grand slams would wish they could have that medal. I'm still shocked.

Also the courts were perfect for her. Hopefully she´ll translate this to more consistent performances on Tour. She has no business losing badly to players like Broady or slumping Lisicki.
Again with all due respect, I saw Monica v Kerber match in Brisbane (I think it was 2014), and I saw Monica
v Kerber last Saturday in Rio. Having follow Mo since she started playing Pro Tennis, The difference between
those two matches was the motivation that Monica had in the Olympics for Playing for PR. Kerber's
demeanor on both matches was identical. The change in Motivation is, IMHO, what made the difference and gave Mo the victory...

Lost in this discussion has been the last game of the Match. Mo was serving down 0-40. She won (3) continuous points to go to Deuce. Then she lost (3) match points and saved (3) break points before wining
the game and the match. To me, this game has been the greatest display of courage that I have have seen since I began following tennis.

Thank you for the exchange of opinions on this Match. Let's witness what this experience will mean for the
rest of the 2016 tour for Mo...Some months ago I wrote on this thread that IMO Mo was going to end up the 2016 tour between 10 to 19 WR. I stand by my prediction...Let's time roll and see if I'm right....

Have a Blessed Day to all!!!!

I think it meant more to her than any other player, honestly. First Gold for Puerto Rico ever. Her reaction was really cute.
