Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

@Grininel , since you missed one of the most emotion-charged wins of Stef's career, here's the video of the third set:

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

I just checked back in the records, apart from the 50K last year, the last time Stefi strung together 4 wins on the trot was Linz 2015.

She really is in good touch.

Did not expect her to win against Nara, impressive.

Keep it up

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Not happy to miss rare back to back to back to back wins from her. Tried to watch in the car but wifi literally kills me with serious headaches.
She was the opponent when S.Williams broke down in doubles at Wimby. So... let's do the magic again against the other sister!

A win!
Into the second round of a grand slam! w00t!

This despite the gloomy pessimism of her one of her own fans:

When she slipped down a set to Nara, I was rather disheartened, but St3fi did still look in decent touch. She cranked it up in the next 2 sets, and played the kind of tennis needed to shut Nara out. It's like she worked her out. I know it was her 5th try, but this is at a grand slam, in front of a large crowd for an outside court.

We've been here in the AO 2nd round 3 times before; uncharted Australian territory awaits.
Stefi has now defended her AO and Andrezieux-Boutheon points, so has a chance to rise in the rankings.

But Venus Williams, though - a really stern test awaits.

Let's look at the matchup this way - Stefi hasn't lost to Venus for 7 years, and never lost to her on a hard court.

Some photos courtesy of our Facebook page.

All smiles before the match:

The game was intense:

The crowd was raucous but good-natured, but gradually went too far:

Stefi scrambled and retrieved

Plenty of that gorgeous backhand slice

And St3fi had the last laugh

Plenty more action shots where those came from. Go take a look.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Just a points question, guys.

The WTA rules say this:
Description W F SF QF R16 R32 R64 R128 QLFR Q3 Q2 Q1
GRAND SLAMS: Australian open, roland garros, wimbledon, us open
Singles 2000 1300 780 430 240 130 70 10 40 30 20 2
Doubles 2000 1300 780 430 240 130 10 - 40 - - -
My question is - if, for argument's sake, Stefi loses to Nara in the first round, does she walk away with 40 or 50 points?
To put the question another way, are the 10 points for the R1 loser also given to qualifiers?

Anyway, Stefi's defending 20 points here, plus another 80 from her 50k Andrezieux-Boutheon title, so she's going to be pretty determined.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

It was a war of attrition, with every point fought over.

Unlike the last 2 games, where St3fi banged down over 30 winners and served 8 aces, today Stefi served no aces, hit less than 10 winners, found it hard to read Lina's serve and just had to doggedly fight.

There were no free points, St3fi had to really earn this one.

She really wanted this, and that second set was won through sheer willpower. And the third? Red mist.

Into the main draw. Rest up, St3fi!

Here's how the match unfolded:

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Well, time to climb down from cloud 9.

That was one of the most emotional, wonderful things I have witnessed in over 40 years of watching sport. Right up there with the 1976 VFA grand final after Harps decked Freddie Cook.

The website "TV Tropes" has a page called the "Crowning moment of Awesome" for a TV character - I think I've just witnessed Stefi's. She's had big career wins, played in tough Fed Cup matches, but for sheer hostility, this was a real test of character.
Which she passed with flying colours. I am so proud! I cheered myself hoarse, and my hands are sore from clapping.

Steffi played her own game, shut the crowd out of her mind, and played with such grace and composure, until the crowd got personal. I won't repeat what they said, but I got seriously angry on her behalf.
When she slipped down a break in the last set, the soccer louts' taunting got to her, and I saw the red mist descend.
After that, while visibly angry, she reeled off a virtual bagel to seal the match. I had tears in my eyes by this stage.

Then this happened:

This is Stefi Vögele mind you, the taciturn Swiss who doesn't celebrate wins, just picks up her kit and walks off.

I could just about burst with pride. Not just with the win, but with how she conducted herself.
This may be hyperbole, but Stefi is an ornament to the game.

Australian Open Qualifying Final Round:

Stef won 4-6 6-3 6-2 over Gjorcheska

Stef silenced the hooligans in the end. Not before giving it back at them after match point yelling 'yeah' at them. Gjorcheska waiting at the net smiled shook her head and greeted Stef with a hug.

Re: Stefanie Vögele!!!

Leave it with me.

Provided I don't get the $#!t kicked out of me, I'll do everything in my power to see her across the line.
