Re: Heather's Cheering Thread

Stosur is an absolute head case in Melbourne! Hopefully Heather takes advantage

Well Sam lost in the first round last year. She's almost as uncomfortable playing in the Aussie Open as she is at Wimbledon.

Good win for Heather in final match. Dan Evans unfortunately failed to win a set in six matches.

Re: Heather's Cheering Thread

I suppose she is guaranteed three semi-competitive singles and mixed doubles in preparation for the AO which she probably wouldn't get in one of the current tournaments.

Ok, I changed my mind. Wateva have still not won a match..

I don't know why Hev is now so obsessed with Hopman Cup.. I get wanting to play with Andy leading up to the Olympics but, this year she really could have used getting some more ranking points in Auckland or Shenzhen.

I have no clue why Dan played, this doesn't seem like his sort of event at all.

That is amazing.

Bencic has a bigger game and was still missing A LOT. Hev wasn't going for it, playing defensively and still ended up with more errors? You can't do that.
I think one thing Hev could try doing is putting more topspin on her forehand.

Her backhand is fine as it though, and she can often hit impressive winners off that side. The forehand does break down too easily and I think because she hits it too flat, so she needs to get more margin for error off that side.

@no-hay-igual So true, and I think the same very often when I'm watching Hev's matches. And her forehand tends to break down quite often when she's not confident with her tennis, which is most of the time nowadays.

I agree she served well. Bencic really hated stretching on either side for a well placed first serve.

Re: Heather's Cheering Thread

I thought she played quite well. Bencic was ranked 7 last year so no surprise that she won.

One bad service game (no first serves in) lost her the first set. She came from behind to take the second set but seemed to tire in the third and Bencic overpowered her. Bencic was playing inside the base line and Heather was playing behind it.

She served well with 9 aces and only 3 double faults. She had the same number of winners (35) and only one more unforced error (41). Overall I was encouraged.

The doubles was a complete mismatch. Evans was out of his depth (66 in the world for singles and doesn't play doubles) and Heather doesn't appear to have learnt anything from her new coach yet. Too easy for the Swiss.

I keep on saying it and I will say it again. Hev makes far too many errors for her style of play. If you're going to be playing 93% of the points behind the baseline (yes this was an actual Hawkeye stat) you can't be making nearly 40 UE's.

Bencic is still not at her best either. Hev just too pedestrian, couldn't move Bencic around enough and just looked really ineffective on court

Bit harsh seeing as its first match of the year but I just feel like she's resuming where she last was. From a personal opinion she just doesnt seem as fired up or interested as she was a couple years back
That is certainly a worrying stat. Hev's net play is well above average for the WTA, she should be trying to approach the net as much as she can. She can hit hard shots, but there are many players that will out-rally her from the baseline.

I agree. She is too inconsistent right now, and being consistent used to be her thing. Yeah, something's gotta change but i don't know what it is.

Her and Dan Evans lost the doubles match too(4-0, 4-1 , cutting down on mixed doubles time I see), although that's not surprising because Evans is terrible at doubles.

I think she should concentrate more on doubles personally after Wimby...team up with Mirza?!
