Yes, I agree, and that's what I thought as well when i saw her a few times.
Too much spin and no weight or force in the shots.
I do think that the past year has really shot her confidence down.

Poor Kat. Lots of work in front of her. I hope she'll step up to this big challenge; so much harder than climbing the first time with no expectations on you.

Kat lost RG QR1 to Mertens: 3-6, 7-6(5), 1-6

Gonna have to re-haul her game, add some depth of shot. She had such a great clay season last year, was gonna be hard to repeat..

Before that big ranking tumult, she was able to sneak into the French Open qualies.

Faced Elise Mertens. She looks like she gave it all in the second set and had nothing left for the third, eventually losing the match 36 76(5) 61.

In that case, I think it's good that she wasn't able to repeat her success on US clay from last year., because she'll be forced to acknowledge that her game needs a whole lot of work if she wants to succeed on the pro tour. I really hope she can make it happen.

Re: Katerina Stewart

Very sad to see Kat's ranking has fallen to 287. She never was able to get it going in this years RG's challenge the way she did last year. Hope it's just a bump in the road ....

Re: Katerina Stewart

This transition from ITFs to WTA qualy level has been so rocky; she's struggling right now even on clay. She entered WTA Rio's qualy field as the 4th seed, and promptly lost in Q1 to Elitsa Kostova 46 36. I'm wondering if she's going through a big loss of confidence now, after the woes of the Aussie swing? At least Kostova went on to qualify and win her first round in the MD, but still. Oh, well, just keep fighting, Kat! And yes, keep adding to your game. It's a long road ahead.

Re: Katerina Stewart

I haven't seen Kat play in about a year, but if her game is the same as it was, she kind of reminded me of like an Errani-lite... lots of spin, but lacking depth on her shots. Again, that assessment was based on seeing her play one match a while ago, but given her results on the HCs, I think she might struggle til she steps up and adds some more depth and offense to her shots.

Re: Katerina Stewart

Kat lost in Auckland Q1 to Elise Mertens, 26 16. She must be so disappointed because she's been training Down Under for quite a while now. At least she knows what she has to work on: she won only 41% of her first-serve points (but 57% of her 2nd-serve points!). Just as ominously, she was 0-7 on BPs.

Transitioning from the ITFs to the WTA is going to be tough, but it's cool that she's over there trying, instead of taking the easy route of staying in the US for the January Florida challengers.

Kat lost in Scottsdale r1, in 3 sets, to the 2015 Pan American Games silver medalist Victoria "Not Carlos" Rodriguez of Mexico.
