It's rather hearteningly, all these examples. Shows that you can overcome these mental issues to a very large degree.

But she still looked to Carlos routinely though.

I think it was this match Toronto F 2001. It was the start of an 8 match win streak against her.

Azarenka has to have had one of the most dramatic improvements in mental strength that the game has ever seen. The way she was so gritty in her last 3 matches at the US Open, you NEVER would've thought it was the same player who had those legendary meltdowns against Wozniacki and Radwanska at the YEC in 2009.

Vika of course. Was always talented, but a mental midget, improved, and look where she is now!

Serena was a major choker in her early career. She didn't start maturing mentally until 2002. Clijsters as well.

Henin's probably the most famous example. That choke against Clijsters at the 01 French Open was epic.

Serena was a mental disaster for most of 2001. She was up 5-3 on Hingis in Australia and lost, she served for the match against Capriati at Wimbledon and lost, she blew like six match points against Seles in one of the US Open tuneups, and it took her forever to close out Davenport of all people at the US Open.

And then there's Clijsters. I remember she had quite an epic choke against Henin in Berlin in like 03 or something. But she always played scared against Henin in her first career.
