Still in doubles though! Won a three setter against Babos and Shvedova. In the quarterfinals.

I watched some of this match and her forehand is too erratic. At 3-3 deuce she hit a good shot, had Stephens off the court and hit her forehand 3 meters long. Spraying forehand errors at key moments
But this was a tough round 1 draw and just a learning experience

It's sad to see what is going on.
Rita can't even win on what by all accounts should be her best surface that should cover her footwork deficiencies best.
It's simply meaningless to be trying to play a first strike game with a single hander. It simply does not work. With her physique she should be trying to play Davenport's game, Sharapova's game. Where an aggressive return striking is a foundation. You can't do that with a single hander. And there is nothing in return. She can't play maneuvering game, she can't play all court game. What's a point of having a single-hander then?

So she really gets exposed on clay since she has so little work on her ball while she can be very effective on fast surfaces.
Rita is too much of a big girl to be an effective mover with single-hander. A footwork for single-handed topspin shot is significantly more demanding.
If you look at those few more or less successful females of recent who played a single hander, they all were much smaller girls. Henin, Mauresmo, Carla, Schiavone. Martinez. They could successfully play single-hander because they are exquisite movers. Rita will never move much better than Sharapova.

You won't name a single successful recent tall power player with single hander. This combination simply doesn't work.
In the long run single hander will likely lead to frequent lower leg injuries.

I hope Rita can turn the tide and end the clay season on a positive note.

Ugh.

Rita's claycourt season was a nonstarter, and Sloane won Charleston and has 4th round points to defend.

Well, I hope Rita enjoys the experience!
I wonder if pressure to qualify for Olympics have a part in her bad clay season.
Race for Russian players is really tight even if you don't count Maria.

Her technique wasn't the problem in that match. Her technique is fine- and quite lovely to watch. But something was wrong during that match after 3-0 up, she was making a lot of unforced errors. I'm sure she will figure it out soon.

Re: Moscow Queen Margarita Gasparyan Cheering Court!

Hmm, apparently she hurt her ankle at some point. That would explain a lot. The ankle strapping wasn't huge so I didn't notice it, just thought maybe it was something very minor, but if it happened during the match it makes perfect sense that the match would completely turn around.

But looking at pics, it seems it was something she already was playing with in the doubles with Siniakova in Madrid. Maybe it started affecting her a bit, maybe not. She didn't seem really injured, just inaccurate. But perhaps this is something that has been affecting her preparation of late.

I definitely could see her turning her form around quickly at some point this season- hopefully sooner rather than later.
