Laura came into the net behind a strong approach, Imanishi hit a fine cross-court passing shot and Laura lunged to pull off a perfect one-handed backhand stretch volley for a winner. Superb reactions. Surely, that point should convince her it's time to discard the wretched two-handed backhand volley that belongs to incompetent net-players like Simmons Haley and Muguruza.
I do hope Laura approaches the net more during the grass season (and uses a one handed backhand volley OFC). Well she will definitely have to use those net skills when playing with Joss but she has the power and length of shot to hit good approaches and finish the point at the net.

Some postcards from Japan:

In Kurume, Laura was looking more fluid off the ground than at any time since her comeback. Taking the ball ridiculously early on the return and on the 3rd or 4th shot of a rally. She racked up a colossal number of forehand winners during the week. The serve still isn't what it was, but this is the smoothest I've seen it since her return. She was even going for the occasional big 2nd serve - something she hasn't done in years.

Favourite points:

Her opening service game against Boulter in the final: at 15-15 she promptly followed up a 2nd serve by flicking a forehand and then turned away within an instant. The crowd paused before applauding, not because they didn't appreciate the shot but because they hadn't the faintest idea where the ball had landed. When Laura's game is on song, you need exceptional anticipation/eyesight to follow the flight path of the ball, because, mentally, she is already a point ahead. As it happened, Laura had hit an off forehand winner into Boulter's forehand corner. Boulter was either standing stock still or travelling in the other direction. Even on the replay, it makes you blink. I expect Laura's opponents feel the same.

Her QF against Imanishi - incidentally, her toughest match of the tournament. Imanishi blocked and sliced back Laura's drives relentlessly. The magic was at *2-2 30-30 in the final set. The match was perfectly poised. She's currently a long way down on the qualie list for the Manchester ITF.

Queens announced some WCs yesterday. I guess that it's about time to start to hear about WCs for the other grass court tournaments. There's a lot of competition for them, with Hev and Naomi slumping below the threshold for direct entry. At least Naomi doesn't need one to play her home town ITF.

Maybe she will drive between the two tournaments?

Or maybe Manchester is the back up plan if she in fact does not get a WC into Nottingham singles.
Too bad we don't have Nottingham qualifying entry list

Ahh that match led to the GOAT on court coaching comment from Felgate;

"People have been playing on grass for 150 years. Grow up." Then walked off court leaving Donna absolutely fuming

Seems quite possible. The withdrawal deadline is next Tuesday so we shall see.

It looks like Johan Örtegren worked with Dimitrov and...JOLA!! :O

The slogan "good to great" sounds strange to me because it was the slogan at my old work place. But in terms of coaching for Laura, it all looks really promising.

I'd be amazed if she didn't get one, if she needs it, but I think that pull-outs in a Challenger in the second week of a slam are inevitable, so if she's 8th in Qs, there is a fair chance that she will make it on merit.

...actually, on the current list, she's now 4th on Qs, but with a MDO in front of her, too.

Broadly and Watson are both in MD, Kristyna Pliskova is top seed. Some other big hitters in this field who good on grass are here too, it's gonna really test her. Way stronger than the Japanese ITFs she's been at these past few weeks, but let's hope the consistency she got from those players can be brought forward here.
