Re: Kiki Bertens

The IPTL has not updated the schedule since I made this, but I'm not entirely convinced it's 100% accurate. I mean, is Serena really going to play two matches in Singapore, skip the last day, and they travel to Hyderabad to play one match there?

Yes, but she played mixed right after singles, so her moment of glory was rather short if you were watching it live. But better than nothing, of course.

She was actually great in singles. She was in sync with the pace of play, and won the important/strategic points.

And things went well in mixed... for the first five games. She and Kyrgios were up 4-1, but then it just sort of unravelled. It was not all her fault, but she made some costly UEs in the TB.

Being able to neutralise Kyrgios's great serve is not really a plus when you're on the same team as him.

Singapore won in the end, but Kiki does not look like the best player right now.

Kiki won 6-2.

Her flight home may be upgraded from freight to second class.

She looked like she was relieved to not have messed it up again.

It was not so much the MP that set off my rant, just to be clear. Not hitting a bad toss is such an ingrained habit that it takes quite a while to un-learn it. It was unfortunate that it happened on MP, of course, but that's what the IPTL gets for changing the rules so much.

IMO, the main problem was that she came unprepared. I think if she had played some practice matches, heard the shot clock and gotten used to the pacing, then she would have been less confused and less rushed. I don't know if that's her own fault or the team failed her, but I just think it was totally preventable. That's why it bugs me.
