Re: Aleksandra Krunic

looks like her Singles ranking is at 116.

I'm not really sure what to expect this year, but I'm hoping she can get near to where she was at around USO'14.

Cagnes 100k

first round def. (Q) Saez Larra 3-6 6-2 6-2. Shouldn't be struggling this much against scrubs me thinks.

Next up Linette or Van Cauter. GL

Re: Aleksandra Krunic

After watching Marina beat Kiki Bertens in the semis I take some of my criticism of Aleks back. Clearly Marina has rediscovered some of her form, she has always had a very good modern forehand (somewhat similar to the more advanced male ATP style forehand which allows for higher levels of spin production combined with power, like Stosur and Justine Henin) and this surface theoretically suits her, but of late she just hasn't been winning anything (she isn't very athletic or fast and her defence on the backhand is rather lacking, so she really needs her serve and forehand and volleys etc to work well to cover her lack of footspeed).

Still, I think this tournament was a big opportunity for Aleks and I doubt Marina was as good against her as she was against Kiki- I presume Marina's confidence has been growing throughout the tournament.

Re: Aleksandra Krunic

Marina Erakovic has hardly been winning anything of late so these last two wins have been critical for her and I'm pleased for her as a fellow kiwi.

Still, Aleks should be disappointed with this. Marina was one of the better second round opponents after Lesia had to pull out.

Looking at that clip, I still feel that Aleks tends to get too defensive and passive. But it's because somehow her groundies, especially forehand, are not trustworthy enough to keep going for her shots consistently. She loses confidence in them and then just keeps the ball in play. In that point she didn't really go for either of the last two forehands, the first allowed Marina to approach the net and the pass was not hit aggressively enough. A pity because her movement is world class, almost above world class really. But if she can't improve her shot precision she won't be able to progress further, apart from displaying amazing court coverage against top players. Beating the mid range players is a very different skill to challenging the top ones, and Aleks struggles against those slightly lower level players.
