Re: FIRST NAMES - Help Needed

The following list of female German tennis players is taken from the "Amtliches Tennis-Hand- und Jahrbuch"/"Official Tennis Handbook and Annual" published by the German Tennis Association in 1925 (for the year 1924). This was probably the first time such an annual had been published since before World War I.

Tennis was slow to recover in Germany after the war and only a small number of tournaments appear to have taken place there in the years from 1919 to 1923 (that said, due to the lack of official tennis publications in those years it is difficult to know exactly what condition the sport was in during that period).

If a player's name is preceded by the word "Frau", this indicates that she was married at the time (however, this might not have been so in every such case). Where known, a player's maiden name is included.

The players are listed in alphabetical order.

Re: FIRST NAMES - Help Needed

Great find. The "Miss Coles" who appears in some British tournaments in the 1920s was Mildred Coles Davis.

Re: FIRST NAMES - Help Needed

In his most recent book, on the early decades of lawn tennis on the French Riviera, Alan Little includes a first name for Miss M. Brooksmith. However, I couldn't find any such person in any of the records (nor could a genealogist contact). The name Alan Little includes was, in fact, the most likely person's second name.
