To Shuji, you can't properly control the air flow if you're making pressure on the abdomen, you are probably tensing your neck aswell that's why you get that nosy tone you don't like. Try expanding your lower chest while breathing, you will be able to take much more air that way thus expanding your head voice register. Try taking a lot of air through your mouth and try to conciously expand your lower chest without moving your shoulders, I promise your head voice register will feel more wide and open overtime if you master that technique. Also, you should not worry about your chest voice, it is fine since you're probably between the higher extreme of the baritone register your money maker is in your head voice, focus on that.

Ps. I'm not a vocal coach though but I've been vocally trained for years.
Thank you for the tips. I will try BOTH methods suggested and see how it goes

There are various different techniques though. Some singers say you can't actually manually achieve this, but it has certain advantages. The key is to create resonance that isn't strangled through your nose and throat.
You expand your abdomen when you inhale but you don't need to apply pressure on it. I guess you're right though, there are different breathing techniques.
