Re: Youlia Fedossova Thread

Saturday morning, October 29, 2005 - a decade ago, basically. I had never heard of her before, but I remember looking at the names in the q-draw and saying to myself, "I've got to see what this French girl with a Russian name looks like."

So there I went... I was as close to the action as I've ever been at a professional match, with no physical barrier whatsoever between me and the players (these courtside seats were removed in later years).
It was pretty much love at first sight. She did well too, winning her three qualifying matches and one main draw match before losing to eventual champion Amy Frazier. IIRC, her ranking jumped by about 100 spots after the event (from c. 400 to c. 300). Sadly, I never got to see her win a match again after that (she lost in QR1 at the Rogers Cup in both 2006 and 2007).

Her top seems a few sizes too small (j/k - navels were all the rage back in 2005 )

Might have a few more to post later on.

Re: Youlia Fedossova Thread

She was a really nice and promising girl, but often injured .

I've read some articles about her, she won a tournament in Saint-Cast, and made a final (she defeated Rezai in SF and lost in three sets to Kostova, huge result for her )

Re: Youlia Fedossova Thread

Thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive reply.

I haven't had much luck digging up detailed info about her either.

I remember seeing her dad around her on the practice courts back in 2005-2007. He kinda looked like a Russian version of my uncle.

Regionalliga... so she's playing in Germany too? I'm not very familiar with this type of event, but I suppose the atmosphere is more laid back than at the WTA level even though it's still competitive tennis.

2006 feels like such a long time ago.

Did that article mention why she ended her WTA career?
Sorry, I'm only seeing your last message now. Yeah, the times when she was still competing really feel an eternity ago. It's really sad because she had potential, I remember when she made the QFs in Tokyo in 2004, I was so excited. But she didn't have the quick rise that one could have expected after that. Still she got a CHR of 107 at 19, she was so close to breaking into the Top 100 (which I remember reading a long time ago was her big goal) in summer '07. She had a big game but always struggled with consistency and with her head even more, she was a real chocked. Her last match was in 25K Andrezieux-Boutheon in January 2011, she retired at 5-7 against Annika Beck in R1 and after that she basically disappeared without a word. She seems to be a really private and discreet girl, even when she was part of the most successful French youngsters it was very hard to find stuff about her in the press. I've never found any piece on the Internet about why she decided to stop her professional career. The only articles I find every now and then are from the regional press, pieces relating about the local tournaments and not doing much more than just stating the results. I read about her only playing for the pleasure now in one of these articles, and that's pretty much the biggest piece of information about her I could find in years.
Considering that she retired in her last match, maybe she injured herself again, and was already feeling weary and fed up with the tennis life and the injury was the trigger to her giving it up eventually. That would be my guess. Someone who was practising at the same club as her told me a long time ago that her dad was always around her and looked very strict, maybe it can explain why she decided to quit once she became a grownup. I understood from FB that she started to study again a while ago. What I find a bit strange is that while she says that she's playing only for the fun, she's still playing competitive tennis, as she's playing a lot of tournaments on the French tour. Hearing that you would think that she only plays matches with friends every now and then. Well I guess I just need to hold on to anything that still allows me to remotely hope.

A pic from this month, playing Regionalliga

Re: Youlia Fedossova Thread

Thanks, they're wonderful.

She's still playing on the French tour, found a recent article a few days ago about a final she played against Razzano and lost, and she reportedly said that now she was playing only for the pleasure, so that it was not big deal if she lost. So yeah, it's no BOMBSHELL!!1 but she's not gonna come back.

Re: Youlia Fedossova Thread

^ Your guess is as good as mine. All the reasons you mention are plausible and could have played a part in her decision to leave the WTA tour...

Here are some more of my photos, taken during another practice session in Montreal, at the 2006 Rogers Cup.

She was looking so cute in her Roland Garros shirt.

Re: Youlia Fedossova Thread

I love them, thanks!

I'm actually always wondering why she "gave up" on the pros. Just really curious. Lost motivation/ got disappointed she didn't break through as quickly as she expected? Lack of passion? Money problems? Wanted to study/ have a more "normal" life?

She's still playing quite a lot on the French tour, winning a lot of tourneys, so it's not like she quit tennis. I wonder why her "success" on the French tour doesn't motivate her to at least give it a 2nd try on the pro tour.

We are now ready to resume our program after a "slight" 8-month delay. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Some more from the 2006 Rogers Cup. The match was played in one of the stadiums, so I was pretty far from the action compared to the photos I previously posted. Hope you enjoy them anyway.
