Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

Anything is possible, but Monica's a veteran when it comes to Asian tour stops -and excelling at them. I wouldn't really expect diet to be an issue in her case, especially in a place where she had easy access to fresh produce. I think lack of match practice seems like a more likely explanation IMO. That's not to say diets can't impact performance, just that it seems unlikely in this particular case.

^ Yeh... but if it's a diet / dish / combination your body isn't accustomed with...

I don't know... I used to not believe in this "mumbo-jumbo" much before either, but since a visit to the food specialist lead to wonders in my wife's mood & elimination of fatigue, just by removing certain items from her diet (e.g.: chicken, veal & sweet-water fish yes, turkey, pork & salt-water fish no more; and other, apparently-random, selections like this), I'm at least open to consider such theories.

She specifically mentioned the farmers' market next to their hotel in Seoul, so I would think fresh fruits and veggies were not in short supply. And then I'm sure some carbs in either rice or noodle form (if not pasta) were definitely available

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

You are definitely right here, it was kinda surprising to hear Monica say she felt very tired after pretty straight-forward routine wins. Still, I think the important aspect is that the injury seems to be gone now. After all just a bit over a month has passed since she was still struggling and withdrawing from matches. This year was very rough, battling with the injury, missing tournaments, missing practices... and pretty important I think also not having match practice since she lost in R1 or R2 in most of the tournaments, so maybe somewhat unprepared to play five matches like in this run in Seoul. Ok, she did play lots of dubs matches, but it's not really the same

Hopefully now if she's healthy she can also have better practices, a good training camp in the off-season and she'll be back to playing lots of 3+ hour matches every week in no time

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

There's a thing that worries me though .

It was her first tournament after USO . Played short and very short matches in terms of time (for her style), didn't play Doubles and after the SF she said she was tired, thing that she also told to Halep and that will not go to Wuhan for doubles anymore because of that. In consequence, she also kinda collapsed physically in the 3rd set.

I mean, it's late in the season, she's not young anymore, but still .... .

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

Winning the title on her Birthday would have been too good to be true
A bit disappointing that Monica was not able to bring her best in this final. For sure she could have won this had she played as good as in the QF for example. But overall a amazing week, needless to say the best week this year by far. Finally a good run, winning some matches in a row and some much needed points.

Still some tournaments to be played this year (Beijing, Linz, Luzembourg and maybe also Poitiers). If Moni can keep up playing like this week, she can still go into 2017 with a good ranking

Lara was playing really well, to be fair and had very little trouble with Moni's slice today.
. Big missed opportunity .

Well, onto Beijing (Q) .

Woah, what happened in the final? Crazy scoreline. Now I'm kinda glad I didn't manage to drag myself out of bed in time.
Hope it was just tired legs. Congrats on bagging the little trophy at least!
And here's to a good draw in Beijing!

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

Another final
It was a typical kind of match where her opponent just didn't understand anything that was going on Should have been 60 62 or something if not for those loose service games. Good job tho to settle down at the end and win the last three games from *34 to seal the deal

Lara Arrua should normally be an opponent you'd like to play in a final but seems it's going to be a really hard match, she's playing great this week, all but one match were very easy wins.

Also, Monica is not going to Wuhan for dubs with Halep after all. Good decision no point in potentially missing singles qualies in Beijing as well. Better rest after this tournament and try to make another good run in Beijing. But first things first, good luck in the final tomorrow

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

Finally got to watch a match of hers this week. Second set got a bit wobbly, but overall it was pretty delish.
I especially liked all those short FH slices that died before Zhang could even get to them.
Let's get the title!

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

Very good match from Monica today Actually I think both played very good, there where lots of quality points in this match. First set could have gone either way but in the second Monica just was relentless. Her backhand was on fire

Hard match tomorrow tho, against the highest seed remaining (3)Shuai Zhang. I'm surprised they never meet before, but they did play dubs together once in 2014.

Re: The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu (Cheering Thread)

Yes, that's the explanation. Being about 22 hours since that withdrawal and the official announcement (about 18-19 when I posted what I posted), I didn't assume that Serena was the one who withdrew and only the knew that. Monica was right after Lucic-Baroni . Damn any player that would withdraw from now till she's scheduled to play her first match (if there will be any) .
