Re: Cheering thread: ...

Assuming Aga reaches the 4th round its hard for me to imagine Lena getting past her, but if Lena can find some of last seasons form there is chance here to at least equal her best AO runs. Fingers crossed...

The doubles draw is pretty stacked but don't think that has worked out too bad for Lena either. Their quarter:

(3)Makarova/Vesnina v Aoyama/Ninomiya
Huber/Sanchez v Brengle/Rodionova
Golubic/Pliskova v Bondarenko/Ostapenko
Rogers/Townsend v (14)Bertens/Larsson

(12)Hlavackova/Peng v Doi/Nara
Knapp/Minella v Broady/Watson
Dabrowski/Krajicek v Kalashnikova/Krunic
Klepac/Martinez Sanchez v (7)Goerges/Pliskova

On a good day Makarova/Vesnina beat all these teams. Though of course with Lena and Katya its rarely straightforward.

At 0-3 in the 2nd set I turned the match off, but before that I hadn't noticed anything wrong with her. When I noticed the score hadn't changed for a few minutes I turned it back on and Elena was having MTO (lower back, side being stretched.) When the MTO was over I did flip back to whatever other match I was watching, so I didn't see her retire, but figured it was more a precaution before AO.

(14)Elena Vesnina v Q
Mandy Minella v Magda Linette
Q v Johanna Larsson
Heather Watson v (18)Samantha Stosur

GL to her. Fell in the first round of qualies here last year, so this really shows the stride she made in 2016!

Len'a singles draw is okay. Starts with a qualie. Stosur round 3. Then Aga in round of 16

Hope its nothing serious. Next week is the biggest tournament for the next 4 months.
Last year Lena won mixed in Melbourne, starting off a tremendous year!

Re: Cheering thread: ...

Made the doubles final in Brisbane, a good run, and lost to Mattek/Sands. Now playing Hobart as the final prep for Melbourne

Re: Cheering thread: ...

I remember Lena and Katya laughing in the press conference after Singapore about how they only played well in the big doubles events. So if they go out early I won't be too worried for Melbourne. Not sure if this principle extends to Lena in singles though....

Re: Cheering thread: ...

Not a good way to start. Lena had her best results at majors in 2016, and the next major is very soon. But maybe she feels some pressure after 2016
Have to relax and at 63 41, serve these matches out

Lena choked a 63 41 lead and lost 63 46 67(5)

So many chances to come back in that 2:37 hr match and just couldn't quite do it

Re: Cheering thread: ...

Not a bad draw if she can beat Cornet. They have the Gold medal forever! Now its time to have fun and make this a Hall of Fame career with more doubles titles

Re: Cheering thread: ...

These two have a long rivalry, with Alize leading it 4-2. Unfortunately, Elena is 0-3 against her on hardcourt, but still GL to her!

As a veteran, Elena had her best year on tour in 2016, ending it with a career high of #16! Can she keep up this performance in 2017?
