From "The Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1888): "Although it had been known for some weeks past that a large number of lawn tennis players were going to enter at Eastbourne, such an extraordinary entry as was received by Mr Alfred Standen Triggs [the secretary of Devonshire Park] exceeded everyone's anticipation. Mr Triggs, as is well known, has his hands full with his own business in the park, and when, in addition to this, he had to make an entry of no less than 341 names in his book, receive the fees – by no means an easy task – and conduct all the business of the draws and preparations for the tournament, it may well be imagined that his office was anything but a sinecure.

"Lawn tennis has now quite a home at Devonshire Park, the game going on there every day and all day, fine and wet weather alike in many cases. Many visitors are undoubtedly attracted to Eastbourne by the fact of their always being able to obtain courts in the park. Only one thing was wanted to have made the tournament a huge success, and this was fine weather, but the even the rains could not prevent the ultimate success of the meeting, still it greatly affected the play of some of the competitors, more especially in those cases where the 'cracks' were giving away long starts in the handicaps. [...] The ladies' singles handicap resulted in a division of the first and second prizes by Mrs Scott and Miss May Jacks.

"Of the three challenge cups given at this tournament, only one changed hands – the veteran's, Miss Margaret Bracewell taking the ladies' for the second year in succession, while the gentleman's challenge cup was lost to the Devonshire Park, as Mr Ernest Lewis retained possession, and so wins the cup for his own property, this being the third consecutive year he has played for and won it. Mr Herbert Wilberforce, who also won the first prize in this event last year, showed much better form, though he was quite unable to win a set from Mr Lewis. But on this occasion two out of three were advantage sets, and the play shown by both competitors was exceedingly good.

"As previously remarked upon, the play in the ladies' challenge cup round was exceedingly hard and severe. Mr Lewis was in good form during the meeting, carrying off the challenge cup and two first prizes, while Miss Bracewell again holds the challenge cup and takes a first and a second prize. Mrs Blanche Hillyard also did well, winning two first prizes – the ladies' singles [All-Comers' event] and the ladies doubles with Miss Ethel Gurney. [...]

"During the meeting there were over 250 matches played off, not including walkovers. The courts in spite of the rain, were in capital order, the head man, Cox, having looked after them well. In addition to the prizes mentioned on the original programme, a large number of other prizes were also given out of the entrance fees. Ayres' championship posts, nets and balls were used, and gave every satisfaction."
