Heart Award nominee: Kateryna Bondarenko (UKR)

The first Fed Cup Heart Award nominee in the Europe/Africa Zone Group I category is Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko.

Bondarenko returned to the Ukraine Fed Cup team at the Europe/Africa Zone Group I event in Eilat for the first time since 2012, following time spent away from the game after having a baby.

She opened her 2016 Fed Cup campaign with a routine win over Portugal’s Maria Joao Koehler. Bondarenko dropped just six games in the course of victory – the most games she lost in a match that week. The world No. 73 then combined with Olga Savchuk to defeat Michelle Larcher de Brito and Ines Murta in the doubles and seal a 3-0 victory for Ukraine.

In her next match the 29-year-old cruised past Sweden’s Susanne Celik 61 63 to help Ukraine to another 3-0 triumph and assure its spot in the promotional play-off against Israel.

In the promotional play-off Bondarenko wasted little time in overcoming crowd favourite Shahar Peer 61 61 to put her nation ahead in the tie. Lesia Tsurenko then battled past Julia Glushko before Bondarenko and Savchuk completed the whitewash with a 62 62 victory over Shelly Krolitzky and Alona Pushkarevsky. The win extended Bondarenko’s Fed Cup doubles record to 11-0.

Bondarenko first played Fed Cup in 2005 and has a 20-9 win-loss record in Fed Cup in 17 ties.

Voting for the Fed Cup Heart Award opens on FedCup.com on Tuesday 29 March.
