Re: Alison Bai

The headline is a little misleading, in that Alison is taking an off-season break, but will still participate in the playoff provided she makes the cut. However nice to see an article about her nonetheless.

Tennis: Alison Bai to spend a stint on the sidelines after Canberra International

Caden Helmers

Alison Bai will take a break from tennis after the Canberra International to recharge the batteries after a gruelling international season.
The decision comes after Bai and doubles partner Lizette Cabrera advanced to the women's doubles quarter-finals with a straight sets win over international pairing Katy Dunne and Jennifer Elie.

"It's been a pretty long year for me, so just trying to get the body right and make sure I'm feeling good," Bai said.
"I'll start pre-season training after that and then potentially another shot at the wildcard playoff in December. We'll see how that goes which will determine what I end up doing next year."
Bai said it was unfortunate professional tennis is not structured like a football season with her time off set to be limited.
The 26-year-old is set to return to action within two months – any longer and she fears her match fitness will have evaporated.
"Obviously now I'm a bit older and a lot more experienced," Bai said.
"I know what to expect and how I should manage myself so it's just being able to get that break. I think just a combination of just trying to find the right balance in a way.
"I've worked a lot on my fitness and mentally as well to just hopefully try and keep it together enough for five matches I guess."
After the Australian circuit finished up in March she hit the court for training before jetting off to Europe and the US for three months.
While it was good to go around the world, Bai said it can still be tough to make ends meet on the professional circuit.
"In America the tournaments are well-run and they provide housing most of the time," Bai said.
"That obviously cuts costs and you make enough to break even each week most of the time.
"The good thing and the bad thing about tennis in a way is you only need one good week or two good weeks, string a few matches together and you're off really."
Bai was glad she is able to finish her last professional tournament for the season at home – it saves her jumping on another plane to see her family.

Re: Alison Bai

Alison struggling this Aus ITF swing. Right now struggling to beat Parnaby who is improving but Bai would handle easily normally. Anyone know reason for slump?

Tess Great stuff Alison. She keeps persisting. Saw match on stream versus Asphiah and she battles each point. Gets free points on serve but with great placement.
Could see how professional she is as she stayed on court after match and cooled down straight away.

Alison is into the SF of the $25K in Brisbane. Plays Priscilla Hon for a spot in the final. If she wins, she'll crack to the top 300 for the first time, which would be amazing for her!

Re: Alison Bai

Defending about 20 points in singles, so she's in a great position to move up with a few good draws

This is the best chance she'll ever have to crack the top 300, as she's going to start defending bigger points early next year. Good position to be in

Re: Alison Bai

Alison had solid results at the 2014 challengers. Here is what she is defending over the next two months. Been largely ignored by TA over the last few years. Wonder if a ranking well inside the top 300 might help her this summer. Ranked in 320's it is certainly doable if she plays well.

Cairns, QF singles, final in doubles
Toowoomba, QF singles, SF doubles
Perth, 1R singles, 1R doubles
Margaret River, QF singles, 1R doubles
Bendigo (1), 3QR singles, QF doubles
Bendigo (2), 1R singles, 1R doubles

Re: Alison Bai

Alison really trying to step it up this week, playing a WTA125 tournament in Nanchang. Seeded sixth in qualifying and scored a lucky Q1 draw - plays Li Yixuan, a WC ranked in the 800s. Go Alison!

Re: Alison Bai

Alison up to a career high ranking of 355 this week

Nothing to defend at all for the next four months or so. Can't wait to see how she performs on grass against strong international opposition - those tournaments will be tough!

So happy with what she's achieved these past six months. Here's to more success this year
